Not getting full GPU utilisation

Hi all,

So I changed to a 240hz monitor today from a 165hz item. I have always capped my frame rate to keep just inside my monitors upper g-sync range so today I adjusted that to reflect my new monitors increased refresh rate however, try as I might I cannot get my GPU to fully utilise and give me the extra frames I want.

Setup:
Gpu - 2080ti, water cooler and oc'd
Cpu - 8700k at 5mhz and watercooled
Ram - 32gb at 3200mhz
Monitor - XV273X
PSU - ROG Thor 850w

To be clear, I'm getting aroun 50-75% cpu and gpu usage whilst playing R6, frame rate is uncapped and I get between 190 and 270 ish fps. I never reach full gpu/cpu usage, I never reach power limits, I'm no where near overheating, nothing else significant is running.

I've tried changing all w10/NV settings to max power but this achieved nothing.

Any ideas?

Overclock your ram.

My ram as it is will bottleneck my gpu to the % it is?

Look in your case you will find that the game CPU thread is at 100% load. The only way to improve is overclock the RAM as pushing the CPU over 5Ghz isn't guaranteed that would work.

Have a look here.

and here

So push your ram since you cannot push the CPU further.

What resolution? Hope it's not 1080p because the 2080ti is not made for 1080p that's why you get crappy framerates

If one thread is near loaded it may hold back GPU even if overall CPU usage is only 50%

A 2080ti is pretty good card for showing engine/cpu thread limits if you are only running at lower resolution or settings?

Its a 1080p monitor. Use dsr and try 1440p or 4k to push the gpu usage up. Your gpu isnt being pushed due to limited res i reckon. That or the game itself isnt able to push the gpu any more than it is. Remember you dont need to push more fps cos a monitor has very high refresh rate, it will refresh at 240 and look nice even if your not even pushing 100 and a gsync monitor will still work great i think even if its not pumping out 240fps as there designed to offer tear free gaming within a range so you dont need max fps just within the range.

hmm it seems it could get to 250ish fps on ultra.

Tho i think in comments someone said ultra preset puts render scale to 50 and maybe thats why he got 250fps, instead of 100 scale?

The video maker says this in a comments a few times, which might be important:

hmm, double check the render scaling setting, it has to be set at a weird value depending on the resolution of your screen. If you hover over your render scaling setting it should show a line such as "your actual render resolution is 3840 x 2160". If it does not say this then change it till it does, your setup should be able to handle it fine. That is the only thing I can think of tbh, otherwise hope you are able to get it solved! Thanks for watching

Agreed adjust resolution and if the usage increases it’s a bottleneck of some kind which is quite likely.

Only other options then are to push the CPU and memory further. Possibly Delid to push further. It may be 75% utilisation but is that per core or overall? As it could easily be a few cores maxed out which are the only ones being used.

Or to get another monitor. In most cases the power drop from 1080-1440p is relatively minor (due to bottlenecks usually) and by far worth the resolution increase. On every big game I play with maxed ultra settings my Ti can keep 144hz+. I’ve been to 240hz before and found it negligible vs 165hz personally, 1440p would be a far better choice IMO.

The Ti will pretty much bring bottlenecks in anything at 1080p at those kind of refresh-rates just because of how powerful it is.

No I've stated above that cpu usage is very low, around 50-75 percent load. Its not bottlenecking the card.

Because only 1-2 cores are used on the games you play not whole CPU. You need to overclock the ram to get extra from those loaded cores.

It is 1080p mate, which is really sad :(

I've usage on all cores and I'm never getting more than 75% and all cores are being utilised as much as each other..

I checked render scaling, its set to 1080p.

My cpu is delidded and cooled by an open loop. Its definitely not getting hot.

I think its a game thing. Unless the ti has some form of internal data transfer bottleneck hence being not good at 1080p.

A cpu can bottleneck a card without getting to 100%.

Try running at higher clock and see if it helps.

he cannot go higher than 5Ghz on the 8700K. Thats why I said needs to overclock the ram but he ignores me completely. Even at 5.1Ghz it would be diminishing returns. Yet can get an extra 10-15% from the RAM alone.

I've taken the ram to 3600 but no change.
There is lots of videos lately on how much difference the ram timings make at 1080p. If you ask in the ram section one of the experts could give you the best voltages and timings for your ram.

Like panos says could be easy 15% increase.

Yeah your correct.

I thought it important to point out to him that you can get a cpu bottleneck even if your not at 100% use.
