Not getting proper BT infinity speeds on my desktop. Is the wifi adaptor to blame?

We have just had BT inifinty installed.

Today I am getting speeds of less than 8mbps whereas my dad is getting 25+. We are both connecting wirelessly, and i suspect my wireless adaptor is to blame.

I have a belkin adaptor, only capable of wireless G. It states it should be capable of speeds up to 54mbps, therefore I assumed it would still be capable of maxing out the BT infinity.

My dads laptop has an atheros AR9285, and that apparently is N capable, therefore I am suspecting that the different speeds are due to my wireless adaptor.

Any idea why my adaptor doesn't seem to be capable of speeds up to 54mbps? should i buy a new adaptor?

Any recommendation for which adaptor to go for? The cheapest N rated adaptors are around a tenner, but you can spend £30-40. Is there any noticeable difference?

Your Dad is close to maxing out 802.11g. All devices on the network need to be 802.11n capable if you want fast throughput.

Get an adapter with a decent antenna. Do you require USB or PCI-E?

which is cheaper? I think i would prefer usb for simplicity, as the inside of my PC is getting quite congested, not sure if there is a free pci-e slot. Any you would recommend?

why do all the devices on the network need to be N capable? obviously our router needs to be (it is), but why would it matter if one computer was G and the other N?

Distance to router, walls etc all depreciate the theortical speed.

either of these are good depending on what you want to spend

Thanks I am tempted by the 300mbps one.

What about the more expensive dual band adaptors - what does that mean? why should I be considering one of them?

If your router doesnt support it then you cant use it anyway

Hi i am on infinity 2 and using powerlines (500 type ) and i,m wireless downstairs onmy laptop and upstairs on my p.c unit and i am getting great speeds of between 61 & 68 meg down and 14 & 16 meg up , i,m using the Asus RT-N56U Router which supports N type and 5Ghz ..
