Hi All,

Today didn't go so well for me. I rebuilt my PC with an MSI Z790-P Wifi with 32GB DDR5 Corsair Vengeance RAM, a Intel i5 13600KF CPU and a WD 1TB black NVMe SSD. Wired it all up to discover the mobo has 2 x 8-pin CPU power connectors and my PSU only has one. I tried it in the CPU PWR 1 socket, added my Zotac 3080 GPU, connected up my monitors and turned it on. All lights were on but nothing was being displayed on the monitors. I thought it was the GPU so I put my old RTX 2070 in instead but still the same problem...black screens, no beeps...could this be the PSU guys?

Cheers
Daz

Have you plugged into the other 8 pin yet, you might have plugged into the wrong one if you've only got 1 8 pin lead

You should only really need the second 8 pin for overclocking and the high end power guzzling cpu's like the 12900/13900/14900k, anything else should be fine with a single 8 pin. You have the 8 pin (usually 4+4 pin) plugged into the left power socket? What make and model is the psu?

I assume you're already aware about waiting awhile for DDR5 systems on first boot? They can take a very long time.

One 8-pin for the CPU is more than adequate, double checks all of your power connectors are plugged in correctly, and also check you are using the correct RAM slots (A2 & B2 for a pair). Once you've done that if no luck, then check with one RAM module only in slot A2.

I did get an orange LED on the mobo

i would say the board is trying to train the memory, ddr5 has very long training interval if its the first time booting i would give it around 5mins at least, with any luck you will get a post screen saying new cpu installed, from here you can go in and set up xmp, adjust any more settings you like save and exit, be patient for the ram as it will need to train at the xmp settings you have applied. With any luck it will boot up and away you go to install windows or load in if already done.

It's an EVGA 600 watt

I wasn't aware of that. How long is long and there's nothing on the NVMe to boot. I was waiting for the BIOS screen on one of my three monitors. The proc I have is the KF model so assume no point in plugging in one of my monitors to the the mobo HDMI port. How would I know what output of the GPU to plug a monitor to if it will POST?

I hope so and I'll give that a try. The card has 4 outputs, 3 DP and 1 HDMI. How do I know what output it will use to POST to?

Any output should work from the dedicated GPU, hook up and wait for the yellow led on the motherboard to change, when it does the memory should have been partially setup, next step is to go into the bios and set up xmp.

When you have done this save and exit the bios.

Again you'll have to wait for training, but after a few minutes it should work at its rated speed

Try them all individually until but should detect automatically .

You need to leave the pc on for 5 mins x 4 outputs gonna take you 20 mins so no big deal.

Did you check the CPU socket for bent pins ?

Crucial say you should wait at least 15 mins. And I doubt that a 600W PSU is good enough for a 3080 when gaming.

op has corsair ram and yeah a 600w will be cutting it fine but for initial boot up and low load situations in windows will be ok, gaming however you may get power offs due to power spikes on 30 series, if you let a 3080 run at default power thats 320w, but power spikes can hit around 400w, only for a microsecond but it can be enough to trip mid range psu's so be careful.

i would say 750w should tbe the minimum and ideally 850w to give you plenty of head room.

Thanks very much. That's what just happened when I was trying to setup my triple overview in Eve Online. The power went completely off for a second then it restarted!

The other thing which is really annoying is I cannot get into the BIOS now. Basically if I restart and hammer the DEL key, one of the monitors flashes colours and this will continue until I press the power button on the case turning it off then turn it back on again and allow it to reboot into windows...any ideas?

Cheers!

when your in windows hold shift key when you restart, you'll get a windows troubleshoot screen, here click on load UEFI and hopefully it will boot into the bios without pressing the del key, if not you may need to still press the del key.
