Not powering with gfx card connected

Hi guys in the middle of my first build and have bought the following componnents
Item: ASUS M4A77TD PRO 770 Socket AM3 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard - Qty: 1
Item: AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition 3.1GHz 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 Retail Boxed Processor - Qty: 1
Item: HIS HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card - Qty: 1
Item: Antec 300 Three Hundred Case - Qty: 1
Item: Antec TruePower New 550W Modular PSU - 80plus Bronze and SLI Certified 3x SATA - Qty: 1
Item: Samsung SH-S223 22x DVD±RW DL Internal SATA 3 Bezel Drive - Retail Box & Software - Qty: 1
Item: Seagate ST3500418AS 500GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 16MB Cache - OEM - Qty: 1

the problem is it wont start at all with the graphocs card in :(

surely i have enough power with 550W!
anyone have any ideas whats goin wrong?

Hey mate the only thing i can suggest is to double check all your connections such as the cables from the psu to the motherboard etc. Some more details on how it wont start at all might be help people on the forums figure out your problems as it could be down to loads of reasons.
 
Do you mean it doesnt start up at all with the graphics card in? Or just doesnt get anywhere? And without it in what does it do?

Please make sure you give a more detailed explanation in future, not much to work with.

ok thanks for the quick reply didnt expect it so fast lol
right what happens is when the power button is pushed with the 6 pin connector connected to the gfx card it wont boot up at all, howerver when i take the 6 pin connector out of the card everything works :s the gfx card even spins :s only conclusion i can come up with is that i dont have an adequate power supply but surely 550w is enough, i have checked all the connections everything seems fine.
 
Do you have another graphics card to test? Im doubtful its your PSU, maybe if it was years old but not a new one.

Also do you have it in the very most top slot? I know i had the same problem when i was running one of my cards in a 4x slot.
 
not got another graphics card to test mate, have tested it in the other pci-e 16 slot (low one) and still with the same result meh :S
 
Ensure all power cables are connected. That's two for the motherboard, not just one. Make sure the monitor is connected and also turned on, confirm it's working with another computer/laptop if possible. Which ram? Assuming they're compatible,

Connect the diagnostic speaker to the motherboard. Does it beep when you try to turn it on? If so, consult manual.

Leaving card connected, remove all but one stick of ram. Does it beep when you try to turn it on? If so, consult manual. If it turns on, diagnose as faulty ram.

Try each stick individually in each motherboard socket. This will swiftly establish if ram is the issue. Again keep track of any beeps.

If it will not post with any combination of ram then you're stuck until you find a graphics card or motherboard to sub in. It could also be the psu, but a motherboard is more likely to be d.o.a. than a psu.

Report back with your findings. The speaker is really important.

i think i have found something that i overlooked at first..the motherboard manual recommends that i use a MINIMUM of 300W :O and the graphics card is at 450W lol so i guess i will need to get another power supply :s
can anyone recommend one for me?
 
Wait, it works when you unplugged the 6-pin power cable, yet your conclusion is you need more power?

That's when you need to do a sanity check ;)

550W is more than almost definately enough unless you're running 8 dvd burners and 15 hard drives :p

Also I guarantee your graphics card is not pulling down 450W :p Not sure where you could have read that. Sounds like your mobo recommends at least 300w and your gfx card recommends at least 450w and you have a 550w. Hence bother recommendations well and truly met :)
 
ok guys tried anothe graphics card which i got a loan of from a friend its an old nvidia gforce 8400gs 256M :P
this works fine lol
windows 7 now installed :D so just confirming here that the graphics card is at fault (which was brand new) :( or
PSU which is too low
any ideas before i start RMA'ing stuff?
 
It's a nominally good psu, that it works with the other card suggests it wasn't completely dead on arrival. So either the psu is a bit knackered or the graphics card is dead (or both, fingers crossed). I'd be betting heavily on the graphics card. Don't suppose you can loan the graphics card to the friend who offered the 8400gs to see if it runs in his machine? Always best to check before shipping things if possible.

knew i would run into some trouble with my first build but on the bright side i have learned something :) so not all bad lol :P
mate thinks that the 5770 wont fit in his machine :S so i am going to try it one more time and see if the drivers make it work (if thats possible) if not might take it somewhere and see if i can get the card tested :)
