not seeing external hard drive ?

hi guys i have a freecome external hard drive which i had disconnected a while back if i plug it in via usb the PC does not see it in my computer, if i connect it up when the PC is off an boot the PC the PC stops loading at the welcome screen and the hdrive just clicks , it has info from this PC that i would like to retrieve and update, any advise as to how to get Windows to recognise it ?

When you connect the device while the PC is on is it recognised as a new device? Is there anything showing in Device Manager or Disk Management?

hi when i first plugged it in it flashed up in task bar new device an the light flashes on the h/drive but there is no sign of it in disk management or my computer the only reference is in device manager with an unknown mass storage device with a yellow ? beside it the system then clicks , iassume this is the hdrive moving and it disappears again then comes back this all happens if i plug in when the PC is off , it does not do this when i plug into a allready on PC- it just does not show anywhere at that stage.

Is it the drive in the enclosure that's clicking?

not clicking as such but the light for the drive flashes clicks and i canhere a click via my speakers

hi it looks like the hard drive mybe knackered as i have tried it on another pc and --nothing , should have done this the first time ,what a bummer thanks anyway for the info.
