Not smart enough to own a PC? I think most people aren't.

As a person who considers themselves a power user and can build computers, diagnose problems and solve my own issues 100% of the time, I feel that we are at a point- and have been for some time- where people are too stupid to buy PCs eh? Oh sure, yeah.

Do you know how to build every last thing you use? Diagnose problems with them? Solve your own issues 100% of the time? Build your own car? Mobile phone? House? Fitted kitchen? Did you carve your bed from a freshly cut pine tree and pluck the goose feathers for your own pillows?

No?

Wouldn't it be great if everybody knew everything about everything?

Er no, because then I wouldn't get paid decent money to do resource planning for call centres.

It's just basic maths and logic, so why can't everybody do it? Probably the same reason that I can't play the guitar, dance or draw a house that doesn't look like a 4 year old did it.

Stop applying real world problems to the geeky world of OCUK where 90% of its members could fix a PC.

I imagine a mechanic thinks the same about you when you take your car in to have a bulb replaced or a basic service...

Are you saying power users, techy people, system builders and programmers don’t use iOS devices because they’re only for noobs?
I think he was just trying to do a funny 2bh..

But yeah, IOS is actually just the mobile operating system, so technically he is right.. You most certainly won't be using IOS if you are any of those you listed, at least in a professional sense.

Some people make money from iPad for professional use to certain apps, to drawing amongst many other things.

Yes. I also build A380's on contract from Airbus in my garage. Do it with my bare hands and some power tools. I can crank out a full A380 in about 3 days. I also carved mount rushmore and have been alive for 3000 years. :P

Nail on head :)

Whilst I agree there are people like you've mentioned, why is it so infuriating? Happy to have them buying PC's to make up the numbers. We're slowly dying out! As long as you don't have to look after their PC for free or hear them talk about how they know about their PC and ignore any helpful advice about it.

Everybody knew a radio was a superheterodyne oscillator? Really? I knew how those things worked, more or less, because I was interested in how they worked and took them apart/read up on it when I was that age. Nobody else I knew had a clue and cared even less.

.

Perhaps not superhet, but certainly the basics of AM and how to build a crystal set (Did you ever try the lump of coal/razor blades trick??)

Ask most people today how the stuff that makes up their lives actually works and most will not have a clue (Even amongst the people who at least used to know how stuff worked) The typical answer is likely to be "Because Computer"

The only real difference between the millennials and the older generations is that the millennials simply don't care.

As I said before. I fear that this will come back and bite us in the arse sooner or later. I don't really believe a society where most people are totally ignorant (Do NOT confuse with stupid!!) about how the world around them works is a particularly healthy one.

Why not? Plenty of professionals will have iPhones.

He probably meant OSX since he was comparing to windows and tbh... as far as proper techie types go apple laptops and OSX seems to be pretty standard

Aye i am almost 100% sure he meant to say OSX, was just playing on it. In terms of macs being used at the high end, it is true in many professions.. although you tend to see a trend..

Start ups & small businesses -> Macs
Medium size "quirky businesses" and graphic design studios -> Macs
High end graphic design studios and animation studios -> PC's/Macs

It seems to be more of an image thing than anything else, one of my brothers is an experienced graphic designer and the higher he has gone in the industry, the less macs they use. My other brother is a professional Animator and similar trends are present, he has started having to do a lot of his rendering work at home on his PC as the macs in the office export so much slower. It really depends what kind of software they decide to use.
