"I felt McLaren offered the best opportunity to win races and challenge for the drivers' championship and if that would not work the one-year break is the result," he told the official Formula 1 website. "And to be honest, I will only return in 2011 if a competitive drive is available."

Must be gutting to see button get the spot he wanted. lol

I think he needs to be more realistic with his salary demands, especially with how things are at the moment.

lol wasnt he on more double the money at ferrari, that button as world champion is on this year ??

pricing yourself out of the game when you want more than twice the current world champion lol

Indeed, he can't demand such a high salary unless he's at the top of the pile.

Seeing as he's getting paid €17 million or whatever it was by Ferrari still, for doing nothing more than sit on his backside all year though, he may as well do, especially if there is some sort of clause in his Ferrari pay off that says he doesn't get it if he finds a new drive.

Kimi is all about the money, I bet when he started getting ok results in the season just gone was when he was told he was out of a job, so had to find a new team.

Maybe one of the big ice cream makers will sponser him?

He's getting paid more to not race. It's sad to see him go because he was a good driver when he wanted to be.

Hope he finds a drive in WRC.

He was great at maclaren, I really enjoyed watching him and he was always fast, plus the 2007 season was great towards the end.

Seems to me he really lost the desire to really compete at Ferrari, I don't know why or what happened. He claims he hasn't but it's clear to see unfortunately. Could you imagine schumi or alonso or button taking a year out just because they didn't get their number one drive? Of course not. I think he's fallen out of love with F1 and now has been taking the mick a bit with the salary demands. He may be one of the best drivers in the field, but he should be earning the same as alonso, hamilton etc, who are also proven champions (alonso twice of course!).

When it comes down to it, we all want to see drivers competing and fighting for every place, drivers who really want to race and overtake, even if it's not for a podium. For that reason, I'm not going to miss Kimi next year, I've already been missing him this year.

Yeah things didn't click with Ferrari. Either the personnel or the car don't seem to work out. He did seem to be better at Mclaren when the car wasn't letting him down.

this.
ferrari are paying him £15m not to race in 2010

I did read somewhere that if he signed from another team his 17 million drops to 10 million. So Kimi would worse off taking a drive for less than 7 million. And given that there is some value to do something else for a year he'd really need more than 7 million an a multi-year deal. If all that was on offer was 4-6 million for one year... It makes sense to pocket the Ferrari money and do something else for a year.

It makes economic sense perhaps. But why would a world class driver with the opportunity to compete at the pinnacle of motorsport take the more financially viable route? I know if it were me, I'd want to be driving instead.

Well if he does, he could probably finance his own team on that money.

Would you say the WRC was the same as F1 though, in terms of prestige and dedication? No doubt it's up there with the biggest forms of motorsport, of course, but I don't think it has a big a following as F1, nor would I describe the cars as being as fast or on the cutting edge of technology. Plus, you don't overtake anything, your only competitor on the route is time.

It's not that I don't like the WRC, it's fantastic, just I think a driver of his calibre and experience in F1 doesn't often leave to a smaller series just because he didn't get the team he wanted. I could understand if he wanted a change, but he clearly wanted to be in maclaren next year.

He's had a couple of drives in WRC during this year so he does want to do it, rather than just thinking 'oh what can I do instead'. Last I read, McLaren weren't being too accomodating with his desires to go rallying during which may well have been one of the sticking points of that deal.

I think perhaps he just fancies doing something else now - he's been World Champion, he's raked in the big money at Ferrari, why not go and do a bit of rallying for a change? Especially if Ferrari are going to be paying you a wage anyway...

That would be amazing.

Kimi's Finnish Delight - Only at Ben and Jerry's!

Yes, I am going to photoshop Kimi on some ice cream now.

i forgot all about the kimi getting paid by ferrari and had to google it so here it is for anyone else who forgot

Next year for the Formula One Championship season 2010, Ferrari has a World class line-up of the recently signed Fernando Alonso, the recovering Felipe Massa, the unsettled Kimi Raikkonen, and the veteran Giancarlo Fisichella.

Between the four of them, it’s a combined three World Championship, 162 podium finishes and 1751 career points all-together. Impressive right!

Giancarlo Fisichella has agreed to become Ferrari’s test driver
, while for Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari wants him to vacate his seat for Alonso, and is willing to fork out $17 million Euros asking Kimi not to drive.

Ferrari is consentual if Kimi wishes to move away from the team, Ferrari will then only owe him 10 million Euros only.

And we all know Kimi wishes to get in a competitive car next year, and so far only the McLaren team is in his sights. But the British team is reportedly able to only offer the Finnish driver 5 Euros euros.

If Kimi Raikkonen is not looking for the challenge, but the lure of the money, then staying with Ferrari and not drive would be the ideal decision, as he stands to make more money by just not driving!
