Evening all,

So, I have been having issues with my pc for a while, I'll try to keep it as brief as possible.

First, my system -

I5-3470k
2 x 4GB Corsair Vengeance LP
Corsair 850 Watt PSU
Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H
Silverstone Raven Case

This was what I had about 6 months ago, all parts were purchased new and the system was stable. I decided to upgrade my GPU from a 6850 to a 7970. A couple of days after installing the 7970 my system started to BSOD, it would then shut down and go in a never ending loop of starting for several seconds and then resetting, with no image being displayed on my screen. If I left the machine for 20 minutes and switched it back on, it would usually boot ok. It would then crash again intermittently , sometimes in 5 minutes, sometimes in 5 hours. This just kept repeating.

I tried re-installing windows 7, and a few other things. I assumed it was the card as that was the only new item, so I returned it and used an old 6950 from a friend. Fast forward 6 months with nearly no problems since. Until, I decided to install a new card... Last week I installed a new 780 ti, everything seemed great for a couple of days and then I started to get the same problems , only now it seems a little worse. If I take 1 stick of RAM out I seem to have no issues, if I put 2 sticks in I get a BSOD inside 5 minutes. Now, obviously this sounds like faulty RAM, but corsair replaced the RAM a couple of months ago as I seemed to have a lingering issue with a rare BSOD. I have tried different sockets.

Now, I'm so fed up with the instability im thinking I'll just get a new motherboard, if I still have issues, I'll buy new ram. The issue I have is this. Do I get another Z77 board, or do I ditch it as old tech and go for a Z87, this obviously means a new CPU...

I'm after opinions, what would you guys do? It's only use is games, i have 1 screen with a resolution of 1920x1200 and I have no intention of changing that (got my eyes on the oculus rift next year) games played, epic RPGs is my passion, no real interest in FPS. The Witcher 3 is high on my shopping list for next year, as is the next Dragon age and Mass effect. Budget? I'd like to spend a £100, but I'd rather spend £500 now than spend £100 now and regret it at the end of next year when my rig is struggling with the games I mention above. Thanks for reading, let me know your thoughts.

Stick with what you have and try solving the bsod

First id flash to latest BIOS,then try with a touch more CPU/vtt voltage maybe 1.08v

Might also need touch more CPU v or higher level llc with a faster gpu

There was a similar thread involving this motherboard and it was a corrupted bios problem. There was a workaround as well. Im on a tablet and cant copy the link but look at latest posts, you will find it.

Thanks for the comments so far.

I tried a new bios 6 months ago, it changed nothing then, but ill try a new bios again tonight anyway. I'll take a look at the CPU voltage also tonight.

The PSU is something I have been thinking about, i'll see if I can borrow one off a mate for a couple of days.

I have updated bios, increased CPU voltage, tried another set of memory and tried a different PSU. System boots fine until I add a second stick of RAM, no matter what sockets I use.

I'm out of ideas. Looks like a new motherboard... And possibly new CPU depending on the path I go.

update: I have noticed the pc will not boot with 2 sticks of RAM unless I plug in 1 single 4 pin 12v connector to the 12v 8 pin atx socket on the motherboard. If I plug in the 2, 4 pin connectors together, it fails to boot. My power supply also has a single 8 pin connector as well as the 2, 4 pin connectors, and this also fails to boot. I can use either 4 pin connector, and it seems to work fine.

Is that normal, does it sound like a knackered PSU?

knackered psu if its doing that

should run fine with just a single 4 pin or an 8 pin power plug

run it with just the 4 pin for now,see how it goes but rma the psu nevertheless
