Not sure when this last dash update came out, but wtf?

Decided to connect my xbox up to tele last night as wanted to rent a film. Been a couple of months since I had it hooked up, and renting has always been an easy thing.... then it asks me to update.

Was browsing horror, was really looking for final destination 5, but happened upon something else and wanted to watch preview.

Well, there was no preview, which was too bad. Then I wanted to see how much to rent... no mention of renting. Then I figure out that the two boxes on the left are telling me this is "free with Sky subscription"...

Why are they listing movies only included in a sky sub? I don't want a sky sub and won't get one, and don't want movies listed that I CAN NOT WATCH!

Annoyed, I go back and find FD5. Ok, there is a green block for rent or buy, after far more clicks than there used to be, I get to the final screen before watching... buy only! Why don't you give me this info up front?

What the hell? It may never have been an excellent system, but I think they have put me off using it for good! Can't imagine anything more annoying than browsing, finding something, then discovering it's "only for sky sub".

Ok, I have not yet had a chance to play with settings, and there may be some way to exclude this stuff, but why bloody do it like this as default?

Awful system. Their dash updates just consistently make thigns worse each time.

Well if you look at it one way, They saved you from spending good money on a **** film.
 
Still think the dash is leaps and bounds over the PS3 system.

I've been using a PS3 recently, and it is so limited and just seems stupid compared to the xbox dash.

Plus, stop renting crap movies. Or you could sign up for netfix, £6 a month and the first month free.
 
I know it's rubbish, but sometimes you just gotta watch these things. I needed brain dead entertainment. Last night was FD 4 and 5 back to back.... 5 was actually the better, but not by much.

Already have netflix, but you are just so limited by what they decide to put on. Always thought netflix was a huge catalog... not much better than the Lovefilm online offering.

Can't say I agree. The PS3 interface is so much quicker to get around, and has far less flashy graphics and adverts trying to distract you. After various updates, the 360 dashboard still manages to be excruciatingly slow to navigate sometimes.
 
Having fairly recently gotten a 360 again, I hate the bloody dashboard myself. More than likely something to do with me being really used to the Sony way as even my TV runs on a similar menu system.

Fair enough, personally I prefer having a simple menu with clear options rather than a cluster**** of adverts thrown in my face. There was nothing wrong with the blade interface for the 360, dunno why they had to ruin it.
 
Same, the 360 dash is a joke, rubbish is being kind. Now I can see why Sony stuck with the XMB.

Really enjoy Netflix the only advert that has noise, especially when the volume is high :(

I totally disagree with you on that one. I wish the Xbox dashboard was more like the PS3 one. Every time they update it it gets more complicated. Plus all the constant adverts are just annoying. I pay £30 a year for Xbox Live gold so shouldn't have adverts thrown in my face. I personally think the NXE was the best dashboard.
 
Indeed, I hate the 360 dash. It would be better if it would allow some customization as to what it shows. I mean, Sky as said in the opening post, Its not something I have, so why on earth is it given its own blade! It should be an app like the rest, perhaps with the option to add a blade if you have the app.

It is getting really overly crowded. And I'm getting signing in issues lately too, infact i've been having the issue since the last update!
 
Sky does not have it's own blade? it's listed in Apps and in the TV and movies section which is where it should be?
 
IMHO sony's XMB is far better than dash.. but we (ps3 users) have to put up with the psn store which is god dam awful.
 
Dont fix what isnt broken, the ps3 xmb has been pretty much the same since launch, all they have changed is the store

Xbox dash has gone through so many changes its just weird, but i barely use the xbox so thats probably why i prefer the ps3 as its what im.more used to, but still think my first point is valid either way

Yea this one was pretty much like the ps3 one but on its side, and it was better than what they have changed it to
 
I think both are pretty crap tbh.

The Xbox one before the latest one was quite good, but the latest one is a UI mess.

The PS3 one looks good but isn't very pleasant to use, the settings in particular is just a mess and the store is appalling.

For in game use the Xbox one is far better, easier to see achievements, messages etc. Like if I unluck a trophy on PS3, why doesn't pressing the home button just take me to it?

It's under Playstation Network instead of Games which is a bit retarded, as for Shami's comment about the settings being a mess, I partially agree. There are some settings which have their own menu for no reason at all, for example if you want to change the resolution instead of going to Settings > Video Settings you need to go to Settings > Display Settings > Video Output Settings. Why they didn't just merge Video Settings and Display Settings is beyond me.

I do like the PS3 but some of the decisions made have been very un-Japanese. It's like Sony has forgotten how to make decent stuff like they used to. The start up noise for the PS Store being an example, it sounds like a typical noise you'd hear on your computer when there's been an error, so much so that the first time I launched the new store I though something had gone wrong! Also some more customization wouldn't go amiss, it'd be nice to have a wider selection of official fonts for the XMB and a colour mixer would be a much better system than being able to pick from 12 different colours. :mad:

Don't even get me started on Playstation Home, it feels like an idea from the early 2000's shoehorned into this generation of consoles for no reason whatsoever. I wonder how much it costs for them to run and maintain that service.
 
Just to balance it out, a few changes Sony have made to the PS3 that I thoroughly dislike:

Intrusive Singstar icon being the first thing on the screen when the console starts - can't delete it, can't hide it
Stupid epilepsy warning during start-up - whose idea was this?!
Removing the PS3 logo and chime when starting a game - I know it didn't 'fit' with the PS3 rebranding they did when the slim consoles launched, but still, it's a nice sound!

The new store...I don't mind too much, although I do feel it's a bit slow to actually get into and navigation can be laggy sometimes. It's an improvement, but there's still a lot of work to be done.

really wish they would give us the ability to customize whats displayed on a page/blade/whatever its called now.

I thought they may have with the pinned items note on the recent update but was disappointing to see it's a folder that you can pin stuff into....I mean whats the point in that?

I just want to pin a few bits to the first page and hide everything else
