I'm running a 4 year old i7 920 rig overclocked to 3.8, with a new Asus GTX 660 card. I have a 19" LG19060TR monitor, which is 1280 x 1074. I don't think it affects my question, but I'm on Win 7 64 Pro with 16g of memory.

Thinking of upgrading the monitor. It's a good one, IMHO, but obviously limited by today's standards. The problem, I think (and this where I need help), is that - whilst I have flight sims etc which would benefit from higher resolutions \ larger screens - I also have many games that are resolutely set at 1280 x 1074 as a maximum, and I'm worried that they will become pretty unplayable if I upgrade. As you can see, I know nothing about modern monitors!

Is there a thread \ site that some kind soul could direct me to that might either set my mind at rest about upgrading, or tell me that I need to stay with what I have?

Thanks

Paul

You just set the monitor to scale or not scale the image. So you either have a 1280x1024 square surround by black bars or your monitor (or video card) scales the image appropriately. There's no voodoo, or science, to learn.

Thanks yashiro.

I have some games that don't seem to scale well (I guess there' not a lot I could do about that), but for those 1280 x 1084 games that scale OK, would there be a preferred starting screen ratio \ resolution that would likely give the best results?

I'd just go for a standard 16:9 1920x1080 screen (which 90% of monitors are these days anyway). If you run a game at 1280x1024 and it can't handle the widescreen aspect it'll just put black borders at the sides which will make it look more or less like your current monitor.

Thanks snips86x - was thinking of around £200 - any recommendations would be very welcome

24" would be the best option with today's games and in terms of the res for some of your games where the max is pre-set, you'll be fine. Depending on the games you are playing, you can set the res or allow it to use it's native. You may get some pixelation, but this would depend on the age of the game you are playing & it's max res.

Does this help?
