I've had an S5 for nearly three and a half years and has done me proud during this time. Dropped it a few times but the screen never smashed and the charging port threw a wobbly when the rain seeped in one time, but sorted itself out after a day.

The battery is nearly finished though. Using the screen for extended periods murders the life out of it and at 35% it will shut down and reboots with 15% and rebooting again will bring it to 2%. Pretty standard for these types of batteries I understand.

Was streaming a video last night and even on charge the battery was still going down.

Of course I will replace the battery soon, but I'm really wondered if its just battery degradation that is causing the sluggish performance, or its internal components have worn out too.

It really is bare-bones setup with most of the common stuff disabled.

Cheers.

Good advice above. The battery just needs refreshing, and if you install a good ROM it will run smoother and better than stock. You probably aren't going to get any official updates anyway from this point on.

Replace the battery and installed a debloated and rooted ROM.

My OH has an S5 and keeps moaning on how crappy it's getting. I tell her to get another battery and unbloat it but she won't have it.
She's gonna get a new phone and I'll tweak her S5 and keep it, good phone!

I only replaced my s4 when I finally smashed the screen after dropping it constantly for years :) I replaced the battery afterwards and repurposed it as a 4g MiFi (screen still works, just cracked). It now has a 6000ma battery and lasts a week and a half on standby :D

Kind of in the same position with my Xperia Z2, i've had that now 3.5 years so kind of looking to replace it in January.

I shall still keep the Z2 and just use it for the sat nav in my car, it gets hot plus the constant charging really can't be doing the battery any favours, so would rather not put a new phone through that.

I think a lot of phones just slow down after years of use because of the amount of crap you install on it. When i dig through the local filesystem i can still see files and directories from apps i'd uninstalled months ago. So android does a pretty poor job of cleanup. I will probably just give it a factory reset when i get the new one, and then just stick the apps i actually need back on there.

I'm in the keep it as long as possible camp as well.
Got a HTC M9 which by all means is a fast phone it replace an M7 before it which had the purple camera fault (which I would still be using otherwise)

however my digitiser has just developed a dead patch, I decided I would replace it but damaged 2 ribbons inside whilst doing the repair, cost £35 for the screen and is going to cost another £15 for the 2 ribbons, but I plan on keeping it.

a debloated ROM interests me I must say, there is loads of HTC stuff installed that I don't want, where is the best place to look for these ?

as for the missus, she CANNOT look after her phone at all, I'm currently using her old battered M8 whilst I wait for parts to arrive for mine, its on its 3rd screen and it appears the GPS doesn't work, camera doesn't work either hence it being replaced, but she won't get flagship phones any more, last phone cost £200
this phone has been dropped in water, her iphone before it was dropped in to water at least twice, possibly more.

Had my Nexus 5 for 3 years, only problem I had with it was self inflicted from dropping it so had to replace the screen 2 or 3 times, waited for the Pixel announcement but didn't fancy paying the premium price so ended up getting a OP3T, plan on keeping it till it dies, will probably switch to Lineage once OP drop support for it.

To be honest, with phone advancement stagnating in recent years, I'll be keeping my phone's longer and longer.

I think my current s8 will be in service for another two years at least.

I'll stick with my 6P until it dies. The thing has been rock solid for me and even with a battery change it continues to be a great all round device. Hell I'm still using the same Spigen Rugged Slim armour case I purchased on day 1 with the phone. I do want a new phone but I can't see me switching from Google's superb camera implementation in their phones, and the Pixels are too expensive to move to.
