Not used anitivirus for about 5 years never had virus (srs)

Have you used ones like BitDefender? That is the definition of unobtrusive.
I think Panda cloud has Bitdefender Free beat on small footprint,as to AVG and Avast they have been fine in my testing on Win8.1 over the last few months or so.

I currently use Panda Cloud and Avast on my two 8.1 PCs.

Bitdefender Free version I avoid due to gaming issues (ME3 crashing etc)when you try to run games like ME3 via Origin launcher.

Bitdefender Free lasted about three hours on my PC before I had to remove it.
I also use Malwarebytes Free version for manual backup scans now and then.

I don't know why anybody would not use an AV with Windows, there are plenty that are free, small footprint etc and no popups, its just another layer of added security which can't be a bad thing.

Linux I can understand since I don't use an AV on my Linux distros.

Not that RAM usage matters these days but BitDefender uses about 18MB of RAM, what's Panda like? Personally not seen any issue with gaming myself.

I posted some screenshots in AV thread here http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18581904&page=4

Interesting, I wonder how good it's website detection system is. BitDefender has blocked access to sites it found malware on in the past and even recently on video links people have posted on facebook which loads the video on some unknown website but is made to look like a video window with a play button in the middle.

Will likely install tonight and give it a try.

Panda 2.3 version did well on AVtest in April http://www.av-test.org/en/home/ on Win 8.1 PCs.

This one is from Sept 2013,http://www.pandasecurity.com/mediacenter/2013/10/29/new-panda-cloud-antivirus-2-3-100-protection/

I am in the never had a real AV program ether crew.
I use microsoft security essentials now because it comes with but other than that i have never used AV since like 2003.
Think even all the computer down at work only have that on as well. never really had any problems.

Been running this PC for 5 years with no anti-virus. Still using Vista (lol). Just did an ESET and Malwarebytes scan, came up with 1 detection: Win32/Adware.Lollipop.D. Notbad.jpg

Vista included Defender real time scanner on by default. Might have helped unless you disabled it.

Doesnt surprise me - i think my av has blocked 1 thing in the last 5 years, another thing disabled my av and windows defender picked it up instead before it installed itself (pc optimizer pro) i think firefox + adblock +noscript protects me more than anything!

Never run AV for as long as I can remember, neither do I install any Service Pack updates in addition to image originally installed. I've had absolutely zero problems & the one time I did, I was asking for it with dodgy websites or inexperience with known file extensions. Even then, I can format within 20 mins its just the software needed after that takes time.

AV bloats your OS from what I can remember, I like my boot to be slick & bloat free from all these AV programs claiming winrar.exe is a virus

Last paragraph is total BS.

If I was MS I would block all PC's from getting a connection unless some basic protection was running.

I certainly would not be buying anything online with it either.

Why is it BS? Especially for those with older hardware & would 100% notice the slower start-up due to extra AV processes having to get all their **** in line.

The MS thing is complete overkill. Unless you're targeted specifically or you're inexperienced on the net you shouldn't be running into anything malicious

Fine but what about all the other PC's your machine is helping some script kiddy group to attack?

Whats the obsession with start up times? So it MAY take 1m 30s to start up instead of 1m, is your ife really so bad that a few extra seconds on start is too much to take?

^^ true.

Wish I had a £1 for every time in past 15years (time I have been online) I heard a n00b say they were too leet to need any AV.

The slowest part of a boot an old PC on a clean install was the Bios posting anyhow.

Any PC can slow down over time.

ESET has setting to not load till PC is up and running (not enabled by default).

I would rather take longer to boot and be safe to use my PC as I like including buying online.

Must admit im rather lazy with my AV, but would like to think im fairly savvy on the internet and wont click on things im not sure about, but this thread has just made me run malwarebytes, which is already installed on my system but haven't run it in ages

I also run MSE and that scans my computer once a week

The scan has finished and found 4 infections, a quick google search of them shows it to be nothing major, but still dont want them on my computer in the first place.

Yes any pc can slow down over time... If not properly maintained. I know this because I see it often and compared to my own pc that runs like a new install still and is running the same win7 install since release (though updated with service packs and maintained manually to stay solid).

Most important layer of defense is yourself, not clicking dodgy links, downloading random files etc but I like to think a antivirus can provide a extra layer of protection (even if it's relatively thin against some threats). After all, there is a chance in the years you use computers that you can accidentally slip up.

As for the performance impact I always assumed it is not really relevant now a days. I use Comodo and as far as I see there is little performance impact on my system.

There is nothing to stop it slowing down as just the way Windows is, a clean install will always be faster than a year(s) old well used install.

MAC's AFAIR do not fragment, though with SSD's it matter less to Windows and on Mech defragging does help.

I have had long running installs that were still running well but once messed up I knew once I formatted that is was not running as well as I thought it was but you simply get used to it as normal.

When it's an extra 30 secs for software that I don't need then yes. It's my choice, you do your thing & I'll do mine.

Wow you've been online a long time mate that's impressive!
I'll carry on without any problems & no AV, don't forget to update yours next week.

Lol some people. If your pc gets slowed down t9 the degree where you notice boot times struggle then you need a new pc.

That's a bit drastic what if the user just browsers the internet? New PC still? Sounds expensive but hey, you're the experts on here it seems
