OP have you considered using your experience and passion and fostering cats and training them as service cats for the Police, Guide Cats for the Blind, Mountain Rescue, etc?

I had a great aunt who use to walk her Cat on a lead, mainly so they could take it with her on camper-van holidays and what not.

Heck one my own cats used to follow me 1.5 miles to school and then go home when I cross the road to enter the school gates back in the day.

Cats deserve some freedom to wander around as they see fit. Keeping them locked up inside is cruel if you ask me. The only downside to having cats wandering around outside is when they find mice and kill them and then bring them in the house :(. Such a mess to clean up. I bet you are one of those people who say you should have your cats de-clawed as well. That is a pretty barbaric practice in itself as well and seems to be common in the USA. They have such weird customs over there when it comes to animals. Reminds me of those animal rights activists that free a bunch of animals that had been locked up and the animals then went on to destroy the local eco-system causing way more animal deaths than if they had just left them locked up. Stupid animal rights people not thinking through the consequences of their actions.

My parents have two Burmese cats, they are indoor cats so my parents take them out for walks on a lead. If the cat is an indoors cat I don't think it's that unheard of.

You're completely wrong about "the only downside" being that they kill mice. I'm sure if you use your head you might be able to think of at least half a dozen other problems with outdoor cats, depending on location.
