As per the title, this is about Crysis, but not in the usual way.
Wondered if you could help me out with a bit of research for Obsidian Edge 2?

Was just reading the "What games are you looking forward to..." thread.
For the vast majority Crysis is high on the list, but for some it doesnt feature at all...

The question is why arent you looking forward to Crysis?

My research angle is checking we have the Crysis 'gaps' covered in OE2..
TIA to any and all who take the time to respond.

I am looking forward to Crysis, but there are certain things that I'm not looking forward to, or rather, not too sure about:

1) The story, we already know so much about it, what else can be left ?
2) Friendly AI, how good will this actually be ?
3) Interactivity, how else can you interact with the world, how can you (the player) change the world ?

Just from an initial perusal of the same thread I'd point out that the ones that don't have Crysis follow a certain genre: i.e.

Crysis
The Witcher
Clive Barker's Jericho
Call Of Duty 4
Quake Wars
Unreal Tournament 3
Portal

= all shooters and a strong showing for the scifi side of gaming.

Crysis
UT3
Portal
HL2 EP2
Assasins Creed
Area 51

= Same again.

TF2
Warhammer AOR
Conan
Darkfall

= more on the fantasy edge

I'd say there are a few that just aren't overly keen on the genre - I for one stuggle with the lack of depth in first person shooters but get a great deal of enjoyment out of a game that requires a bit of thought and strategy - i.e. C&C, World in Conflict and the Metal Gear Solid series.

I do very much enjoy multiplayer and play BF2 and BF2142 very often because of the player interaction and the 'quick fix' nature of the gaming.

Hehe, I recognise that post. ;)

The reason I mostly listed shooters is because, aside from The Witcher, there doesn't seem to be much RPG/adventure that suits my taste coming out before the end of this year.

You were almost spot-on. It's true I do like shooters, and definitely do like the sci-fi setting, but I feel that the market is being flooded with too many shooters (most of them with no depth at all), and would love to see more from other genres this year.

I am a pretty avid strategy gamer, but unfortunately for me I prefer turn-based strategy as opposed to real-time strategy. The last few years have been frustrating for me as a TBS player as the only ones worth playing have been Civilization IV and Galactic Civilizations 2. This year the market was flooded with games like Supreme Commander, Command & Conquer 3, and the upcoming World In Conflict and while they all seem to be great RTS games, they're still RTS games.

I picked up Lord Of The Rings Online earlier this year to feed my MMORPG hunger, and it's done a nice job, but the single-player side of RPG gaming has been dull for me. Dark Messiah was crap, can't wait for The Witcher.

So... What was my point again? :p Oh yeah, not everyone who lists Crysis and shooters in general is a shooter fanatic, some of us are just bored of the lack of anything else to play. :D

I hear that - it's all about the fancy game engine and pretty graphics - storyline and game depth can clearly go to hell :D

Yeah turn based holds interest to me too - I was always hoping for an Epic Scale Warhammer 40K game to come out with Titans and the like. I loved the Playstation Front Mission 3 game - was very cool.

I'm not looking forward to Crysis at all because
1: Looks exceedingly repetitive
2: Story looks dull - if I'm to finish a single player game, the story needs to fuel my interest.
3: The AI. I think on hard they might be godly, to the point where it's over the top... and on easier they are target dummies.
4. While the GFX are nice, again the settings look very repetative to me, but i'll hold on that judgement.

I'll be buying because I want to play OE2 and other mods that will be coming out

OH, yes... and UT3 is out around the same time :D

the game looks fantastic and until i play it properly i cant give a true reason however i would say the lesson learnt from STALKER is one reason, it was hyped beyond belief and for me it never delivered, in fact i thought it was awful (imo)

FarCry, at the time amazing gfx that pushed everyones hardware to the limit but truly lacked in 'gripping' gameplay , i guess it felt like a tech demo that never made me say 'ooh one more go' ... again another let down for me

Crysis seems to fall into these catagories at the moment, from watching all the videos and mp footage its not really inspiring me and ill re-iterate until i play it and sample the gameplay i wont know

ive gone back to playing DoDs and CSS instead of the battlefield series so im much more interested in Team Fortress 2

If there's one thing i'm worried about with Crysis it's the story, I don't see how they're gonna pull people in, the games setting seems so narrow, one island and a bunch of delta force guys. Not as epic as could have been, I still hope they can pull it off though.

im just concerned about the gameplay fair enough the game graphics wise it looks great but there has been to many good looking games that have fell flat on its face

I'm not looking forward to it because it seems their entire focus is on telling us just how amazing the graphics are. Is there actually a fun game underneath? *Shrug*

Thanks guys,
So far there seem two schools of thought, one is that some folks just arent into FPS, which is fair enough, the other being based around a image over substance concern for the SP game.

Is there anyone out there who has concerns about the multiplayer, and if so what?

(Note if you are part of the beta program please stick to the facts in the public domain, not personal experience, I dont want to be responsible for someone breaking their NDA )

its basically headless chickens

deathmatch style gameplay with very little tactics. needs good squad improvements, possibly a class system, but not vital at all.

absolutely no commander position or anything like that, those are useless in games as more than likely its a nub who will spam orders

(im adding to this the more i think about it)

maybe et:qw objective style gameplay? but for it to not suck as much as that game. kind of conflicts with the lack of commander post, maybe have a kind of 'mission' multiplayer. a set scripted map where players on one team defend, and the others attack, or steal something, you get the idea. that would be good, providing everyone stuck to the mission at hand.

Im sick of seeing that same Jungle, just looks like FarCry with a gfx mod to bring it up to date, and that stupid voice MAXIMUM SPEED, MAXIMUM ARMOUR etc... gets right on me ****.

i have a real reason, my pc is broken, so i cant think of any pc games or i'll get sad

otherwise it is good but i'm just not overly fussed about it, so many other games coming out which interest me more

It's the very high technical specifications that are scaring people off. Reports that you need a stupidly good computer such as 8800GTX and quad core are spreading like wildfire, and the beta's performance is not helping. Even with my 8800GTS, 4gb of memory and core 2 duo I am no longer interested in Crysis, because the beta runs like a dog for me.

Doesn't the beta have a sort of debugging code in it though?

I keep hearing that it does, and that it'll hamper performance a bit. I remember that the beta for Vanguard: Saga Of Heroes had the same thing (but the retail client didn't run any better, so who knows.)

Why I'm not especially looking forward to Crysis.

To me it looks like every other FPS game I've ever played with a few extras and pretty graphics. Oh...and some awesome corrugated iron roof-collapse physics. This view has been formed mainly from looking at the large body of totally uninspiring (to me) pre-release video gameplay material.

I'm ignoring the pictures that you can't tell from a real beach. Although this is impressive, the "degree of photo-realism" isn't one of my main evaluation criteria for computer games. Ever since Doom 3 computer games have looked good enough for me...except for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. which in my opinion looks a bit scruffy.

I wonder how Crysis is going to end? My money is on a gunfight with a giant blue squid looking thing (possibly encased in mech-style armour) in the big hemispheric room at the centre of the alien spaceship...you know the room...its just past the enormous stash of ammunition and medpacks. Quick take him down with the rocket launcher whilst avoiding his special zero-G ice attack! I got the "good" ending!

[I'll probably end-up playing it]

Oops missed that you'd moved on to MP...sorry
