Notebook HDD problem

A friend of mine gave me her laptop to check it out, i have suspicions that the HD is gonna die soon since i think that its making weird noises.

Is there any program that can check the HDD to check if thats the case?

What make HD, if it's Seagate or Western Digital they have tools you can download
to check the state of the disc.

Speedfan has an in built checker, not sure how reliable it is or use Windows to run
a disc check.

If you google "Ultimate Boot Disk" you can download a disk with dignostics for all the major drive makers nad loads of other handy stuff. It's even got diagnostic tools that'll tell you want sort of drive it is (or you can just look in control panel in windows).

It's also worth checking the event log, sometimes disk read and write errors can be recorded there.
