Notice Handed In, I'm off to S.E. Asia (in a few months) with a dream about craft beer...

Cambodia is weird. I can sum it up by the goody I was offered on a bus. A millipede. I mean really, what am I going to do with a 2 foot millipede. The woman seemed to think my face implied "that's an interesting millidegree, please, put it on my face". Almost punched the pair of them.

I almost punched a giant millipede. That's Cambodia in a nutshell.

Thats it? Our minibus ran over a motorcyclist on the way to angkor wat and didn't stop..... not to mention the retiree pedos all over the place

Soup, BBQ, Stew, or raw.

You could have done a lot with that :p

What a great attitude to have towards it :)

I wish you the best of luck and please let us know how it's going from time to time if you can.

Yes, that aspect is disgusting.

Cambodia is such a beautiful, yet sad country - terrible terrible history. I remember reading all about it and feeling rather ill, then all the locals trying to take me to the local shooting range. I declined, yet a load of people my age went and did it. I couldn't shoot an AK47 in Vietnam either... it was just... wrong. Perhaps I'm a big softie.

I shot an ak47 in siem reap but have to admit that it didn't feel good after seeing what I did there especially the school the khmer rouge took over and the killing fields :(

Good on you Ahleckz!

Quite a lot of your post resonated with me - I'm currently teaching English in Vietnam after moving out here last May. Was similiar in that I booked my flights very spur of the moment, realising if I didn't just do it I probably never would.

If you do decide to bring your beer operation over here, please give me a shout! My beer skills are limited to consumption at the moment, but I'm a fast learner. Oh, and as Participant pointed out, the bia hoi (like almost all the beers out here) tastes of practically nothing. Gap in the market for a decent craft beer for sure!

Good luck. :)

Good luck.

I've been in Thailand for nearly 11 months now, and I don't really want to go back for quite a while yet. I have a website which is making me more than enough to live happily. Don't try to become a local and you'll do great.

I don't get why you'd have a problem shooting a gun in those countries, I'm assuming it was at a range aiming at targets and not people?

I'm sure shooting a gun is good fun, but handling a tool of death at the site where great atrocities took place and unfathomable misery endured... pass. It's so unappealing to me, it makes me question the morality of those that willingly do.

Making fun and games out of war is everywhere in society, especially in video games, but I draw the line at the above.

Shooting guns in this context is a sport, it's nothing to do with war unless it's being done in the context of war. That's like saying you won't shoot a bow and arrow anywhere near Agincourt.

The fact that you'd question the morality of people that would do so, even though it's totally unrelated, makes you a bit of a pretentious wimp!

In the words of Lysander's link, .......... :p

I'm not sure it takes balls, I mean the World isn't that big and anywhere is only a flight and £500 away... That being said, I suppose to leave everything you've known and own and to set yourself up with only a few items of clothing is pretty daunting.

I have no idea how one would set up a brewery in SE Asia but it might be fun, or a very expensive waste of time... I'll hopefully be able to answer that question one day.

As for the gun discussion. There's an army base opposite Phnom Phen airport where they allow you to shoot guns on their range for money. I didn't do it, though only because I ran out of time. Just because they had an awful war and that's to be seen when walking in any area of the country doesn't mean one shouldn't shoot some guns.

What a strange view you have.

Anything can be a 'tool of death' it's the person that commits the atrocity, not the implement.

A bit like blaming obesity on knives and forks :D
