Hi there,
I posted a thread a month or two ago about decent places to live in Nottingham while my girlfriend completes her nurse training.

We have sold our house (STC) and were originally going to rent a flat in the Lace Market.

However, we've seen some properties on Mapperley Road which have parking and seem to be quite a bit bigger. Having walked around the area it seems ok, though thought I'd check on here before arranging a proper viewing.

So Mapperley Road, is it a safe place to live, can you get into town without walking through dodgy areas, and is it too close to any bad areas?

Cheers

you would be right near forest road which is aparently where all the prostitutes are, goose fair goes just around the corner from you aswell so if you ever need a copper theres probably about 50 in the area during that week of the year. :P

Just trying to get my head around where Mapperley Road is. If I'm right, it's near St. Annes? Which is considered a 'bad' area but in my opinion isn't bad at all. I'm sure some people will beg to differ.

My brother lives near there in a decent size house for the price he pays and he gets no trouble though he doesn't walk in to town.

Is your gf doing the training at QMC?

There's also that... Apparently West is where there at! Not that I would know.

go to saint anns i hear its amazing there

Hope thats sarcasm!! :p

I lived on the edge of st annes -edge of the park by victoria leisure centre (terrace off robin hood street overlooking the park) and there was always a lot of trouble right behind my house. My car got broken into several times and eventually written off due to damage caused trying to nick it. Housemate (girl) got mugged at knifepoint at the end of the path. Ground floor windows on houses behind all had metal bars over windows. Always scrotes hanging around threatening people. Not a nice place at all.

Moved to Lace Market and it was much better, although smaller! Much better place to live short term.

Hi there,
My girlfriend is studying at the QMC.

The are I am referring to (Mapperley Road) can be seen on google maps here.

The actual Mapperley Road area seems very nice, though I'm not so sure about Mansfield Road!

Ideally we want somewhere we can get to and from town without too much hastle. I can't believe how expensive it is to get a decent property there. Our current (2 bed) house is located in Newark town centre, is in a culdesac, very quiet and even has a garage. We bought it for £107k, though have had to sell at considerably less :(

Not a bad area at all, granted the further north east you go up Mapperly road I believe (speculation) is a little dodgy but I have only driven through.

I live just off North Sherwood, so about one minute walk from where you pointed to on the map, and whilst it's true there is a lot of prostitution it seems to largely been cleared at this end of forest road and has moved towards forest road west.

Also both town and QMC are very easy to get to from the bus stops on Mansfield Road, having lived here for around 2 years I can honestly say I have never had any trouble and whilst I know people who I have, it's more a case of not being naive.

Thanks for this info :)

Would you say that it is safe to walk into town during the evening, or does Mansfield Road get a bit dodgy?

Cheers

Mansfield Road is fine on an evening, lovely fish restaurant there as well called the Lobster Pot. Good Bars at your end of Mansfield Road as well, Fade and the Hard to find cafe + the Lincolnshire Poacher (iirc)

As you look at that map, are you North or South of Mapperly Road ?

Have you considered somewhere slightly further out but on (not literally, may a street or so away) the tram route? I catch it in every day from Radford Road (or Wilkinson Street) which is about 1.5km west and slightly north of the mark on your map and it's only ~12mins into the centre of Nottingham or 14mins to the Station and runs very regularly. But it runs out further out towards Hucknall.

the thing is some areas have a really bad rep but most parts of them are fine to live in.

bulwell has a bad rep these days which is where i grew up but my parents still live there in whats aparently a no go area at night and they never get any bother.

a lot of the bad areas are just bad because of a few streets , some are genuinely stay away areas though like broxtowe which probably isnt to well known but its a total scum area
