Anyone still use this? Anyone going to go down the OES Linux root?

I work in an environment where the senior director thinks its a good idea to run Novell AND Active Directory in tandem.

Oh dear.

We still use Netware OES for logins, print queues (still not moved to iPrint), file server and local department NDS. It's mostly due to our Computing Services department insisting on still using Netware for cross-campus services though it has also been very reliable for the last few years with only a couple of days downtime due to (mostly) power cuts.

Our staff mostly use AD now and it's only students that use Netware on a regular basis. It can be a problem when CS want our staff to use a Netware account on desktops without the Novell Client to access their services.

We'll probably be moving to AD in the next year or two depending on the usual politics in the university and need to deal with legacy services for a few years after that. It's a bit of a mess all the different accounts and systems we use as different groups have different needs with hardly any policy on a single system.

I'd personally go for Novell's eDirectory over AD if your looking to authenticate and integrate lots of Linux clients.

I'm still a big fan of Netware and OES does the job quite well (OES 2 particularly, OES 1 was a little bit poop and buggy).

We use both eDirectory and AD. Our new Exchange mail system uses AD obviously but we've been using eDirectory for account authorisation under Windows and Linux for years.

I'm a CNE and CDE but Netware is dead as dead and eDirectory is rapidly becoming a niche product. I've been at two FTSE 100 places in the last year who are migrating away from it.

Frazzles, we have a few customers still using Novell 5/6 SBS and I've been tasked with potentially moving them over to OES\OWS:SBE. Last time I tried OES it was massively unstable, I'm hoping OES2 is a big improvement. Also, it looks like the SBE product has been cut right back (no Zen) and OES2 'standard' may be the only option.

I'm wondering whether it would be just easier to retrain the users on Outlook et al but after using Groupwise for the last 10+ years I imagine they will not give it up too easily.

Doesn't seem to be a problem for us, as some of my users also use NHS Mail, for all its sins.

I can't stand OES for somethings, and find it needlessly complex for a lot of stuff thats simple on AD, but there are some genius things about it too.

Shame that the powers that be want to run AD alongside Edirectory, with AD being passive but for some other network software.

I'm an AD man, I like the mix of graphics and the occasional cmd window job.

Ive never got 100% to grips with Novell, I mean, I could design and roll out an Edirectory structure, but it would take much longer than AD, which is almost install and go for the basics.
