Confused and my Google skills are failing me..

Now TV, faqs say streamed content is 720. Yet they have a 4k box? What gives?

Or was thinking of installing the app on my 4k android TV but not sure if the quality would be worth it.

The box is for showing Netflix and Youtube content that is UHD 4K.

If you have a TV that's already capable of running the standalone Netflix and Youtube apps at 4K then surely you're already covered in that respect? The NowTV app would simply give you access to content streamed to that portal. Can't see much point in duplicating Netflix and Youtube via another layer on the TV.

Okay so there definitely isn't any higher quality content on the 4k box then. That rules that out.

now tv needs to get with the times..

Then they will start stealing from their own Sky subscribers. NowTV is NEVER going to offer the same quantity/quality that full-fat Sky offers. Financial suicide.

Yep, they're now selling a box that delivers competing services in higher quality than their own. Baffling.

They stated early this year that they'd be adding a higher-quality option to Now TV by the end of this year/early next year (edit: albeit 4K seems incredibly unlikely).

That being said, ever since upgrading my TV to an LG OLED I do think that Now TV looks better via the app than it did via the box on my previous 1080p Samsung, plus the interface on the app is much better than the box too.

What about the potential custom they are missing out from of the people who don't have or want full blown sky.

1080p streaming is apparently coming next year but I can’t see them doing UHD/4K any time soon. As above this would negate any reason to buy Sky Q.

If you have a smart TV that is showing Netflix in 4K then you don't need a NOWTV box as the NOWTV app is absolutely fine for streaming.

Sorry not sure the point you're making?

I watch 4k Netflix but not sure whether I'd be happy with the 720 streams from now tv, or are you suggesting the quality is okay on a 4k display?

Easiest way to find out is to try it. It's obviously not going to look as good as a decent 4K stream by any stretch of the imagination, but it's decent enough.

whilst I agree nowtv image is fine (typically £2.5p/m ent) the ~128Kb/s mp3 2.0 sound, and lack of subtitles (if I want to multi-task) is annoying,
as we have discussed before.

The wonderful world of a captive market. If you want UHD, then you buy full-blown Sky. If you don't want full-blown Sky, you can't have UHD.
Whereas it sounds great to offer a "budget" offering for those that don't want full-blown Sky, I'd dare say they would end up losing more customers to Now from Sky than they would suddenly gain new customers.

I get subtitles on NowTV, using their white box (its quite old now i think). I used to press it to show the description of the programme i was watching, but over time its turned into a subtitles on/off button (or i guess if there were no subtitles it defaulted to showing a programme description)

Just out of interest, has anyone used Now TV trough the Not box, then started using Now TV as an app on tv? Ive got the box at home on an old tv, with movies and entertainment packages. I loaded my login into my parents smart tv, expecting to see something like how Now is presented via its own box, but it seems to be missing the entertainment package completely and doesnt let me continue watching what i was before. Just me or has anyone else found that?

I understood the what hifi review to hint that UHD was coming to the 4k now tv box this year. They do speculate os much over there though.

Sure they havent got BT TV ? The Now TV app on BT TV only shows movies due to a legacy agreement/squabble betweenSkyand BT TV. Although it was meant to become a full blown NowTV app this year not happened yet. It could be something like that with your parents tv.

Streaming content for Chromecast or similar is 720p, however, if you have a dedicated box or TV with the app built-in or downloadable it will be 1080p.

I might be completely wrong here, this is just how it appears to me. :p
