NS & I Premium bonds

I know but its all about the 'fun' aspect for my uncle. He has the money to do this. Different if you didnt.

Where is the fun? There is no horse race to cheer over. There is no televised results show to count your numbers on. There is nothing. Just a cheque every so often if you actually win.

He wins something every month. That is the fun bit. Last month he had 4 cheques. £25 each. That is the fun bit for him

All the prizes are always won. Don't listen to what the stats say, the chance of winning £1M outweighs the lower APR you get on average.

Besides, in a year i won £50 on my £500 deposit, i'd like to see you find me an interest rate that good elsewhere. I can win nothing next year and still have a better rate than an ISA, I might also win a million quid too!

Heh, didn't realise this was an old thread until I saw this post by me.

Just to update, I cashed all my premium bonds and put them into an actual investment fund which has increased their value by 30%. Although perhaps if I had left them in I would have won £1M.

ERNIE should do that I reckon, do a draw even for those people that cashed theirs out, then whever someone like me gets a prize they could say 'you would have won £6K (or whatever it is) had you not cashed your bonds. That would be pretty troll.

I have some as a cash hedge against the risk in my Stocks and Shares ISA but i am starting to think i should just buy more stock with it instead as the returns are really poor if you don't win.

Is it better than playing the lottery though in the sense that you are entering a competition of some description with some chance of winning something but you still have your money ? (ignoring inflation of course)

If you buy PBs just because you think you have a good chance of winning the jackpot then you are mad, i agree. As said, my uncle does them because it is fun having the chance to win various amounts of money each month and he is yet to go a month without winning something.

If you are after solid interest / income then obviously dont put your money into PBs!
