not really sure where to put this, but i guess this is as good a place as any.

i bought a linksys nslu2 yesterday, and have put unslung linux on it allready.

has anyone else got one of these and played with the software etc?

We have one for connecting the network to our Topfield digibox, running unslung off an ancient 8Mb usb disk. Only software on there aside from the OS is the ftp daemon for connecting to the digibox, tried installing dropbear for a bit more security than Telnet but there isn't enough space. I might try rebuilding it with my 128Mb usb disk sometime.

dont use dropbear, it sucks. use openSSH. then use it with putty. far more secure. and from what i have been told, quicker and has more features.

I only tried dropbear because its lightweight, no chance of openSSH having enough space to install. Speed isn't a big deal, the digibox transfer is all done over FTP and I'm not too concerned about security, it's only used from the internal network.

I was originally going to set it up like this: http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Puppy/HomePage but there wasn't enough space for puppy either.

I wonder if it would work with my 4Gb MuVo as the external drive?

don't see why not. at the end of the day it wouldnt hurt to try.
i take it you have done the old 133 to 266mhz trick?

I haven't, just reading about it now.
very easy to do. all i did was cut the solder joint with a stanley knife and made sure that there was no resistor lying arround.
doesent make much if any difference to the temperature.
but makes it a whole lot quicker.

Telnet on my slug has fallen over aswell, ftp daemon is still running, but its going to need a rebuild anyway, looks like.

just out of interest, you are aware that you need to re-enable telnet everytime the slug restarts dont you?

I thought I had followed the steps to permanently enable it, but it the web interface it was disabled - that was the problem.

if you set up openSSH you will never have that problem ;)

without starting a new thread

i have a 500gb external usb2 hard drive that i want to add as a NAS on my home network so im thinking of buying a NSLU2 to achieve this.

i want to share mp3, home video files and documents over the network,

would i need to install the unslung firmware on it? or use it as stock?

any info much appreciated!

thanks

I've had one of these units since last xmas.

I've been running OpenSlug on it.

It gives me Samba for file sharing and was hosting a simple PHP website being routed to the slug via DynDNS.

It's been down this week due to an error on my behalf.

I wanted to share files across a network, but still have the ability to plug the USB HDD into any PC. So the HDD is formatted to FAT32 and the system runs off a USB Stick.

I can't recommend this device enough. Low power consumption and great possibilities. I've donated some money to the firmware site. With the good exchange rate at the moment, you can appear quite generous.
