Hi there,

Just new to NTL cable and have yet to get myself a wireless cable router so for now I'll be stuck on ethernet access. However, when I attempt to install the modem using the ntl Broadband setup disk, it claims that there's a problem with configuring the DHCP settings. So I decided to manually set it up instead.

After using the plugging in the ethernet cable I proceeded to add the settings, as follows:

IP Address : 192.168.1.8 (Just random)
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

I then set the DNS settings to 194.168.4.100 and 194.168.8.100, which I found on some website about ntl cable.

Even after I had done this, the connection will not connect or times out (constantly Acquiring Network Address), even when I set it to automatically acquire the settings required it still doesn't work, and this is really frustrating.

My housemate is unaware of the settings itself, or how to find out any of the requirements of the cable. It seems that the disk easily installed the settings for them, they just plugged the ethernet in and it worked fine.

I am at my wits end, and I have no idea to fix this, but it is imperative I get online to login to my student login to enroll in classes etc.

I just tried the disk once more to the same ends, still nothing.

Thanks if you can help me out here, I'd really appreciate it.

The model of the cable modem appears to be ntl 250? I am unsure.

Is this the first time your installing NTL broadband or are you just swapping over to a router?. If you already had it installed via usb and you've moved over to ethernet then there is no need to reinstall using the supplied disk, just plug it into ethernet and let xp setup dhcp.

If your still strugging i suggest you pop over to http://www.cableforum.co.uk/
and ask in there. someone will be able to help you out.

First time installing. Works fine on my housemates computer though.

I cannot install it via USB as it claims that I have a DHCP error. I have manually entered the settings, but this turns off DHCP. It looks like it's connected fine, but when you try to go to a website or connect to msn, everything just times out.

Thanks for the suggestion bud, I'll repost this thread over there then.

You have been unplugging the cable modem's power and plugging it in before hooking it up to a different PC/Router/changing between ethernet/USB, right? If not, try that.
