Last night some bright sparks who live in my area, thought it would be a great idea to set fire to our local exchange/junction box, which has caused my whole street and the streets surrounding it to lose all there NTL services . I have already spoken to NTL who have logged the fault but have no ETA on when the fault is going to be fixed. I was just wondering if any of you guys worked for NTL and know how long things like this take to repair?

Thanks in advance

(The box is a smoldering mess at the mo, if your wondering how badly damaged it is :( )

we had one hit by a car our way a couple of years ago, took about 6 weeks iirc

though the impact wasn't as bad so maybe they will be quicker with yours

Depends what priority the support ticket is, if enough people complain the priority increases iirc. Will be fixed today/tonight (the network engineers work 24 hours) if it gets raised to priority 1.

it didn't affect me just some folks down the street

NTL only refunded for loss of service

they came out in a couple of days but it took them ages to sort it, the green box had to be replaced etc

I'm not saying that will happen just that it took a long time when I saw it , ours was just a small amount of folks BB and phone afaik , don't know anyone around here who uses ntl tv ( well apart from the folks with dodgy boxes )

Go door to door, calling on any of your neighbours with the NTL grey box on their wall and get them to ring in the fault? (which would make sure it gets raised in priority over a couple of calls).

I know that when we had repeated problems with our VOD, when I mentioned to the engineer that a couple of neighbours were also having the same problem (and he'd just been to the same problem on a nearby street) he rang his center and told them about the fact it appeared to be an area problem.

I think a fair few of my neighbours have called to complain, but i have spoken to the mrs a few time she said she has not seen one NTL van engineer etc, i would have thought because of the serverity of the problem somebody would at least come out and see what the damage is?

how hard to replace the box? what work involved?

Who knows with NTL? Everyone in the area complained but it still took 2 months before it was replaced and working again!

I would guess it depends on the damage.

If it's been a fire it's possible the wiring into the box is damaged, so it's not just a case of replacing the box (assuming they have one suitable + gubbins in stock and available for emergency repairs).

Yippee, just spoke to the mrs and all has been repaired, pretty good tbh, rewired and fixed within 3 days. :D

To give you a small idea of the work you need to try and put a load of burnt telco pairs back together, re-match those pairs to the correct E&D sides to tie in with the switch and that's assuming you don't have to re-pull cable/dig out ducting. The TV/BBI side is simpler but the telco will probably be done as a temp fix and full cab rebuilt later. Score one for the idiots.
