Are these all the same company!? I'm very confused.

Who owns who?!

NTL -> Telewest -> Blueyonder???

And to make matters worse, Telewest is changing to Virgin Media? Is that still owned by NTL?

i just had a letter off Branson telling me he will be the one providing me with internet so has he bought NTL?

No. NTL took over Virgin mobile and Richard Branson became part of the board as part of the deal. The company is being renamed Virgin Media on 14th Feb.

NTL and Telewest merged, hence why its known as NTL/Telewest: Blueyonder was the internet division of Telewest for the broadband lauch some 6 or 7 years ago.

Rebranding of these to Virgin Media is on 14 Feb, but you can keep existing Blueyonder/NTL e-mail address or if you choose, or switch to Virgin Media Email address.

hopefully Mr Branson will get around to sorting out the horrid connection my region has been sufferening for 5 months lol

i don't mind giving old dickie my money.... most things he touches turn to gold.... now about upgrading my 10mb to 100mb!!!

Personally I hope the merger has good benefits as I am on a Blueyonder connection and have only ever had about 6 or 7 problems in the last 6 years.

Unforunately not everything Mr Branson touches turns to gold as things like Virgin Cola, Virgin Vodka, Vrigin Cosmetics and Virgin Brides were not exactly a success.

I use Blueyonder and have had good service for years but in the past month im getting max speed 100kbps download from anywhere, on a 10mb connection. I know for sure its not my pc, no viruses or spyware etc

I noticed since NTL/Telewest have been taken over by Virgin, they are introducing fair use policy to their *unlimited broadband...its even advertised now www.knowfirst.co.uk

rang up and complained at poor speeds in my area tonight and had my bill for 10mb reduced to 17.50 for 3 months.

The guy did say at first why don't you downgrade to 2 meg as you can't get full 10 meg. Yeah then I'd be on 1/2 a meg download speeds if I did that I thought.

Be interesting to see how the new changes affect us I think prices will come down but they might implement download restrictions.

Trouble with my connection is I share with four other people so I don't want to move to any isp that enforces download limits.

I am going to be really p off if they do, i get ntl installed next wednesday because its unlimited.

What would fair usage polacy mean ?

i cant find any FUP on there

im not doubting you

just want to read the small print as to what the FUP is

Click on "our services" then "broadband", then in the bottom right corner see the fair usage notice. No thorough details though, but no doubt we will find out sooner or later.

My net is running at an all time low tonight, 80kbps on a 10mb line, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA if I don't laugh I would go mental

Thanks for the info here guys!

I assume that a:
Netgear WGR614UK Wireless 54G Cable/DSL Router

Will work fine on whatever company these guys are, for my Cable broadband?
It says cable in the title at least...

Is is the same with my old ASDL modem/router? In that I just plug the wires into it, and everything is taken care of in that? Or do I still need an external cable modem which then plugs into this?

Just want to make sure, for my one piece of mind...
Thanks! :o

i believe you still need your cable modem

as cable routers only have an ethernet port

and dont have the coaxial port required to actually plug the cable into the router

least thats how my NTL setup works

anybody managed it without the CM ?

All that has happened is NTL:Telewest have taken over Virgin Mobile and decided to rebrand the entire company Virgin Media. As part of the deal Richard Branson owns 10.7% of the company, hence why everything your getting through the post is from him!

Nothing is going to change apart from the company name on the top of your bill. You will continue to use the same modem (though new Virgin branded ones will come out, but they are basically the same as existing ones only black and have no USB port) and I wouldn't expect the service to change much either, at least not right away, though it should improve over time.

Ok, so when I get my cable modem, I will plug a cat5 cable into that, and put the other end into my netgear router? I assume the cable will come with either the modem or the router...?

Just want to make sure I've got all the right kit before hand :)
Thanks!

As far as I'm aware, NTL already operates a fair usage policy (albeit a very lax one), so that's nothing new.
