NTSC playback...

It'll quite happily play NTSC. Some fish tank equipment I bought earlier in the week came with a setup DVD which is NTSC and it plays fine.

The issue is the region coding. The DVD drive firmware only allows 5 changes IIRC before it sticks permanently.

Ah, so if I was to flash the firmware a number of times between various regions it'd lock to the fifth time it's flashed. But as it'll play NTSC, there's no need to flash it?

Sorry if these are stupid questions. I'm only used to playing PAL and I really want this film (so have to go NTSC).

No flashing of firmware in the traditional sense is required. It's just a counter.

NTSC and region coding are two completely different things.

Regions are defined by geographic location to allow the publishers to control release dates.
NTSC and PAL are the two main TV standards in use.

The DVD software included with OS X will play either TV standard and DVDs from any region. The limitation is the drive.

In days of yore the region lock was in the DVD playback software (otherwise known as RPC-1), then the MPAA got cross in about 2001 and forced the drive makers to only allow 5 region changes in hardware (RPC-2).
