In Windows XP c:\windows\$ntuninstallxxxx$ folders used to exist that had installation files (for the purposes of uninstallation) of various Windows Updates.

I wish to save some space on my Netbook and was wondering if anyone knows if Windows 7 stores the update files in a similar way, anywhere?

We routinely blow away everything more than 2 months old on our servers. Some jackals that built these things didn't consider that Windows expands during it's lifetime and didn't configure large enough C: drives.

It is safe to remove older folders. Keep the latest few though in case a patch gives you problems and you have to revert back.

I am quite happy about deleting old folders and the implications, I just don't know what/where/if the folders in Windows 7 are like $NtUninstallkbxxx" in XP. ;)

The Windows 7 ones are kept in the winsxs folder, you do not want to go deleting them in Vista or 7 though, the system heavily relies on them. It keeps the older versions to keep application compatibility.

Do not delete them.

Disable system restore and run ccleaner slim, that'll free up other files that you don't need

Ah, a Google query did highlight the winsxs folder, cheers for verifying it. System Restore is only using 100ish MB, the only additions to the netbook (due to it's limited HDD space) have been windows update's.

I will have a look at ccleaner slim and see if that makes a difference. It was on 1GB free space for ages and recently it has dropped down to 600MB and all I recall doing is updating it once a week tbh. No other software gets loaded on it, not even used it for web browsing.

What ccleaner does is remove temp files (it removes browser cookies by default, so have a look at the options before running it).

How big is the hard drive?

Hah hah! Sorry! That's what I get for being distracted before reading the full question. :o

No worries.

8GB. I had to use vLite to make the install fit (removed certain apps/drivers etc) and disabled hibernate as well. It is just a dell mini 9 I got cheap and it is purely used for downloading files (to an SD card).

Edit: ccleaner saved me 100MB and System restore may be the culprit as it has gone up to 250MB usage even though it was only 100MB last week. Cheers for the help.

If it's just for downloading, I'd be tempted to put a lite XP on there, and just block windows update.

You can get XP to around 250mb installed and still be fairly functional

I used to have XP on it!! Put Windows 7 on it as a test and just left it on there to be honest. When space finally does run out (which I am sure it will do at some point) I will stick XP back on (I have a ghost image of it on a USB stick).

you might find this handy windirstat
provides a nice graphical overview of space usage, which makes investigating how to free up "just a bit more" much easier.
