Hi guys,

I cannot seem to restore my NTUSER.dat file (im using roaming profiles). Whenever I attempt to do so, it is overwritten with a new NTUSER.dat file.

Any ideas why this is happening folks?

Kind regards
TM

Well to change the NTUser.dat file you need to restart with a different account that account can not be logged on at all otherwise it will cause problems.

Not sure if you've tried that?

agreed, the account you are trying to restore must be fully logged out (preferably have the pc restarted) before attempting the restore.

are you restoring from a snapshot of the profile?

Hi guys,

im using roaming profiles (Win2k3 domain). So, with the user logged out, im restoring a backup of there profile (my docs, application data etc). However once its done and the user logs in, the NTUser.dat file is reset.

The user profiles were from a different domain, thus im not sure if there is some sort of conflict going on here.

Do your users have local copies of their profiles on their PC's? If so, is it possible the time stamp of their local copy of ntuser.dat is newer than the time stamp of the restored file. If so, the PC would copy the local profile back to the server because it would believe it to be newer.

AH! I never thought of that. Good thinking!

Any ideas how I would go about changing the timestamp of the backed up files?
