Nuclear Power. What are your views?

There is a new electricity link between the Netherlands and UK (BritNed - 1000MW capacity) being built to support security of supply, Offshore is ramping up but clearly Nuclear generation is still required to support demand in the UK.

See this article I wrote last year:

Nuclear Britain

Contains this graph amongst other information:

We have an article on concentrating solar power today, personally I'm really positive about this technology, more so than fossil fuel, nuclear or wind.

Concentrating Solar Power

Doesn't this make us more reliant on other countries, rather than less, thus defeating a big part of the current energy security issue?

Solar power in the UK? Hmm.... :p That'd mean whenever it's a bit overcast there'd be power cuts and brown outs!

Nuclear power is our only long term and sustainable choice really. I don't think I would want one near me though as it tends to ruin the value of your house!

Dolph, yeah imports - but that's not really different to reliance on imported oil, gas, coal, uranium etc... Energy security is about diversity - the proposal is 15% of UK electricity.

NathanE, I suggest you actually read the article to understand the implications for the UK.

Yes and yes, bristols not far from oldbury power station and I wouldn't have any hesitation living closer. The fears are based on scaremongering not facts.

You are correct there are no facts linking power stations to lukemia clusters but still would you take the risk with your kids?

There are no facts that Schools are linked with lukemia clusters... but still would you take the risk with your children.

TBH i think Nuclear power should be used. We should be more like France. 75% should be nuclear with the rest Renewable and coal.
