TPS is routinely ignored by the disreputable sort of companies that make these phone calls. My Mam and my wife are both TPS registered but continued to receive many unsolicited calls.
The BT 8500 has worked perfectly for my Mam.

I maybe get 1 or 2 unsolicited calls are year as I have been X/Unregistered for years so tend not to appear on the lists and I don't answer no number calls (home or mobile) as if they are known to me they can message me and I will call back. However diallers can spoof any number they want. Legally you should only present numbers you own, but they can present any number they wish. TPS is fine, but reality is people who spoof fake numbers won't give a toss about TPS, they just want connects.

Actually had a funny one the other day.
Random London number called and answered with the typical few "Hello.... Hello?.... Uhhh hello" before any response. Then get some guy saying something but the audio level was too low to make out what he was saying (checked my level at it was maxed). So asked politely for them to repeat as I couldn't really hear.
The voice comes back with "can you hear me m8?" so I respond "yes but barely, the line is really quiet" and also the seemed to be a lot of chatter in the background.
I then got the reply "oh **** off" and they hung up. Was a bit miffed at this so I called back and the line was fine but sounded like someone else so said I had been called and want to talk to a manager. Spoke to the guy and explained and he said he'd check the call logs and speak to the person and seemed genuinely apologetic as he was a training manager so obviously they try to get them not to swear at customers
and then took my name off their list and went about my day

if by some miracle they have taken you off their dialling list, they will simply sell your number on as a 'live' contact - prepare to be bombarded with 400 calls a day for the rest of your life
Reviving this thread to update/rant.
I eventually gave in and changed my number in December just gone. Have been absolutely religious about who I have given my new number out to, so as to avoid any more hassle. Other than friends/family, the one and only 'organisation' I have given this new number to was the kennel club, and their dog lost service when I was registering my new pup with them. They accept mobile numbers only, and I gave them it for obvious reasons.
Cut to 5 weeks later, and guess what - I've started receiving daily calls from numbers in the Midlands. Different each time, so again there's no point in trying to block the numbers.
I think it's fair to say that unless either O2 are passing on numbers, the cold callers are just trying random numbers and hoping for the best, or a mate is having an absolute laugh; the Kennel Club have sold my number on?

Wasn't there scam going around where they'll get you to say 'yes' at which point they have your consent for something? Don't know if that was some DailyMail rubbish or not though.

Your new number very likely used to belong to someone else, there are only limited numbers and the phone networks have to recycle unused ones regularly.
Started having nuisance calls by passing my caller id app.
Its when it looks like a landline with a region I answer. (I can't not). But thank goodness I haven't got a landline!
If I answer I then just leave it connected while they talk. It achieves nothing, but I get some satisfaction that someone else isn't getting hassled in that time

If it's some dodgy cold calling company using probably fake calling ID, then they are probably just calling blocks of numbers on a auto dialer rather than having specifically you on a list of people to call. E.g calling every number from 07751 000001 to 07751 999999.
