Morning all,

My friend wants to build his first gaming pc, I've asked a few questions as to what he's doing on it and need a little help with the CPU in regards to what he needs.

So it will be mainly a gaming PC but he will also be looking to do abit if Video editing aswell, I said you'll need something with abit of poke to it but no need to go all out, he doesn't mind going down the used parts route so what would you all recommend l, he doesn't mind Intel or AMD Ryzen.

Thank you

Sounds good to me, these only work on the B550 boards, correct?
No they work on most AM4 boards all the way back to A 320 with the correct bios.

Example check CPU support list.

B550 supports pcie4 which most of the 5000 seeies has, some are pcie3 like the 5700g and 5700.

B450 is pcie3 but not a big deal in terms of performance , but the m2 drives will be only pcie3 as well so something to consider.

Should be supported by all chipsets providing there was a updated bios available.

Thank you I'll take this into consideration, may just see if I can get a MSI Tomahawk at used price

I paid £120 for my MSI Tomahawk MAG b550 around Xmas time. It has loads of features. I would imagine it should be cheaper now. Nice board, but like anything else an acquired taste. (Rainforest btw)

Oh really that's a good price I will search around and hopefully grab a bargain

Whatever you get, make sure it has the latest bios or a way of updaing bios without needing a older gen CPU.

Yeah true, I have a Ryzen build myself so could always use that CPU to update the BIOS if needed

There's two different B550 Tomahawk boards I believe, the one I have doesn't have WiFi onboard so take that into consideration. There's so many ports and connections I have no idea what most of them do lol. It's heavy too so it's well built. Bios is also nice, although I haven't delved into it yet. I also got 16gb 3600 Vengeance ram for 37 squid. Wish I would've paid the extra for the gay RGB stuff now but hey-ho. I can always buy another 16gb and slot then between each other. No homo.

Bare in mind that with 4 sticks of RAM quite often XMP doesn't work properly on AM4
um am4 is dual channel if i recall, so of course 4 sticks wont work as thats quad channel and intel, you lose dual channel if you put in a 3rd stick on am4, its the reason i have 2 16 gig sticks on my am4 board, i have 2 16 gig sticks with xmp (intel extreme memory profiles) took till am5 for amd to have their own mem profiles (expo) which i recently set up on my dads new comp which is am5 :)

3600 mem is sweet spot for am4 and 6000 cl 30 is sweet spot for am5, no idea what intels is as they change motherboards as much as cpu's at the drop of a hat.

4 sticks generally tougher to run so might not clock as well or hit advertised XMP but they should still work :p
My old PC is a 4 stick 3600 XMP setup on AM4 and it runs dual channel fine.
