Number of Countries visited - a question

Definition of visit would seem to indicate a purpose beyond simply transiting through a place. So only non-option is pancake.
 
Interesting. Majority (just) think an overnight is required. I guess there is never going to a clear demarcation but clearly most think you have to at least leave the airport!

If these criteria were applied then my number would be
1 - 30
2 - 29
3 - 28

(with three new ones planned for the next few months)

Hers would be
1 - 30
2 - 28
3 - 25

Might have to show her this thread...:D
 
Don't think you need to stay overnight - one time I was in the US I did a couple of day trips into Canada for instance - didn't stay overnight but got to see a few sights - counts as visiting IMO albeit a bit close to stretching the definition.

I dread to think what my number would be if I chose #1 probably over 40! :eek:
 
I wouldn't say that you'd have to spend a night to count it, rather to count it I would have to say that it would involve actually going out around a town/exploring the area beyond the airport/train station/port.
 
Another one for thinking you don't have to have spent a night there but you have to have gone outside a transit area (such as an airport) and actually spend time in the place. Having lived in europe in a town within easy travelling distance of multiple countries I'd say I have visited many countries but never had the need to stay a night in them. In fact I've probably spent more time in the Netherlands than many people who have gone on a holiday there, but I've never had an overnight stay there.

In that case my visit count shot up from 11 to 20+ :p

I remember waiting 6-7 hours at Hong Kong on the way to Australia. Never left the airport. But it was such a huge airport it was fun to explore :)
 
A much more important question would be how long do you have to have visited a country before you can tell people you lived there.

And no, 3 1/2 weeks as part of your gap year doesn't count.
 
If your competition criteria is simply having been to the country then it's frankly impossible to refute that you haven't been to a country if you've got a stop off at the airport. You're in that country, on the ground, walking around the airport. So yes it does count.

However if the criteria is visiting the country, then you can't really claim that.

I'd say 2 months
 
is there not some law that untill you pass thu immigration /customs you still in international space
 
I'm between 1 and 3.

1 (airport connections) wouldn't be enough UNLESS you were allowed to wonder outside of the airport then that would count.

3 (at least 1 night) would be more than sufficient. Imo spending just the day / several hours would count for me as long as it's not no.1 i.e. confined to an airport.

Obviously Wales doesn't count regardless to how long you've stayed there :p
 
I would definitely count a day trip as having visited, I don't think overnight is required.

I'm going to say several days + nights to say you visited a country or region, a large city perhaps 1 night and 2 days (although need not be full length). Sure a small village you can say you visited within an hour. You can't say you visited Rom if you spent a few hours on the suburbs, you need to have seen some of the sites, walked some of the streets, sat back and enjoy the the goings on form a cafe or bar, had a couple of meals etc.

Sounds like you accumulated significant time in Estonia which sounds like a proper stay, thus you visited.
