I need some help and advice with number plates.

I want to keep the number plate from my existing car and put it on a new one. What time scale would this take, and any idea on costs?

To then put a number plate on the original car, again what time scale am I looking at, and any idea of costs?

The plate I'm keeping means nothing to anyone, just sentimental attachment.

It's pretty much immediate nowadays. Just go through the DVLA website wizard, you can either transfer the plate or shove it on retention (80 odd quid cost I think), as soon as you transfer the plate the DVLA will let you know the 'new' reg for your existing car, it's usually (probably always) the original reg before it had a personalised plate added to it.

Obviously you can't transfer a plate that makes the new car appear newer than it is, just in case that's a consideration.

Takes a week or two to get the physical V5 paperwork through.

Looks like it will cost you £80 and should be immediate. DVLA should automatically assign a new registration to the car losing the registration.

Retaining your current plate can be done online and is instant - you will just need to pay an £80 retention fee.

Once the plate is on retention then if it's a brand new vehicle then the dealer can put your private plate straight on. If it's a used vehicle you will have to wait until you receive the V5c before you can assign your plate.

@Dyson is the number plate a private plate that you have the rights to? Or is it a standard age related plate that was assigned to your current car at first registration by the dealership supplying the car?

As long as the current V5c doesn't state that the registration number is non-transferrable, then you should be fine to apply to retain it.

A new age related plate will then be assigned to the current vehicle that will likely be marked as non-transferrable.
Perfect, thank you

Hopefully get onto doing it later today

Didn’t know you could do it with non-private plates…

Beware the online service only works during daylight hours, 7-7 if memory serves. Also change your insurance immediately too, and make sure both of these are available to do at the same time.

I put the physical plates on my car, went the change the insurance and found their website was down. Next day it was up again so I swapped it, then discovered the DVLA website wasn’t open for swapping the plate over. Had to do it after 7am the next day before I could go to work…

I didn't know this either, I figured the DVLA would want some money for giving the rights to the plate to someone in addition to the retention fee.

I didn't know this until I had a look this morning :)

Also reading up on it previously, you could retain almost unlimited plates and new age related ones would be issued, but it was being exploited so after the original plate has been retained, further ones are then non-transferable.
Additionally I think there is a requirement that the car has to have a current MOT for you to be able to retain the plate, to prevent people buying old non-running cars purely to retain "desirable" reg plates.

to be honest its always been like this (well for the last 30 odd years) my first plate was on a car that had no mot, foolishly i agreed with the mechanic who owned it to pay for the mot and repairs as a swap for the plate.
it could have been expensive and trust me her indoors gave me hell about it until he asked for about 40 quid to cover it.
again the transfer fee at the time was a bit more.
other plates ive aquired came from main dealers i worked for or cars i bought and repaired, mainly irish, dealers didnt want to sell motors at one stage with irish plates so were picking them up for transfer fees only .at one stage i had 5 vans and a car all on plates of various heritage but my original is still with me as a couple of others on retention.
