Hi guys,

My gf got a car 3 years ago that came with an NI cherished plate on it. The dealer told her maybe one day the old owners will want it back.

Yesterday she got a call demanding the number plate back. The plate has now been registered to my gf for about the past 3 years!

I think the number is now hers as it has been registered in her name. Surely the old owner should have applied it to another vehicle if they want to keep it?

Any help on this would be appreciated. Maybe the process is different in NI from the UK mainland but its worth a shot.

Cheers

if the plate is registered to your gf i'd say it's now hers... I'm sure the seller would have had to transfer the plate off the car prior to selling in order to keep it

I think the only people/firm who can demand the plate back is the DVLA.

Also is the letter a demand or a request?

the plate is now legally hers, if the previous owners really wanted to keep it then they should have put the plate on retention which is what i have done to my current private plate
if they really want the plate back then they will have to buy it and pay all transfer costs

i'd say unless you signed something at point of sale its yours, you could be nice and let them have it back (as long as it doesn't cost you anything) however if they are demanding the numberplate back i'd tell them to go stick it :)

Thanks for the info guys.

The way I see it is that they were trying to escape paying retention fees and hoped they would get it back. I am trying to convince gf that it is hers but she isn't so sure - bit hard to convince!

The number apparently is worth a few grand so I want her to hold on to it for sure.

Like Siliconslave says, if they are demanding it, id tell them to go stick it too. If you get a feeling of hostility then I would sell it back for a reduced rate, but wouldnt give them it so easily.
If they are nice however . . . .

Well the thing is its the dealer who is asking for it back so he must be under pressure from the originally seller but then the dealer obviously owned the plates after he bought it - so really my gf has got it second hand!

What is the number plate, if it means so much to a previous owner? Sell it back if there is a lot of money to be made.

Tell them to go jump. The plate belongs to your girlfriend.

There are plenty of agencies which will buy the plate from your girlfriend, transfer it to an English car and put it for sale in England. Until you do that, it can only be transferred to a car in NI.

Otherwise, offer it to the original owners at market value. You can get it valued if you call up one of those agencies. There's one that my family have dealt with in Enniskillen who were very helpful. I'll hoke out the details for you.

EDIT: Here you go.

How the dealer thinks they can ask for the plate back after 3 years is beyond me, just tell them politely that the plate stays with the car which is now legally owned by your gf.

& keep us updated :) i'm guessing they either promised the lady they would hold the plate for her and have messed up or are just passing on her request...

blatantly its hers, the car is registered in her name and the registration is hers. the old owners have no obligation or right to request it back, if they wanted to keep it they should have transfered it.
