Number plate transfer help..

Thanks so much for the info guys. Much appreciated. I did phone the DVLNI just to get more info and they said it was a civil case and they couldn't comment. I'm just going to tell gf to transfer it to me and i'll look after it! The number is a three letter - single digit number so its worth a few grand apparently judging from similar plates here in NI. Will keep you all updated.

What, like "BKZ 4" or similar? That'll be worth quite a bit. It's not a civil case, there is no case. The plate belongs to your girlfriend. If the dealer pesters you, tell him to refrain from telephoning you and to carry out all further correspondence in writing. Tell him any other contact will be considered harassment.

If it's worth as much as some other similar plates, they may do everything in their power to try to scare you into giving it back to them such as solicitors letters and whatnot but ignore them, they haven't a leg to stand on.

Yeah its that format of number Scuzi - I am convinced its her plate but her folks are friendly with the dealer so i'm scared that they will just agree to give it back to maintain the friendship! I'm going to get them to ring me about it instead though. I just can't believe this is happening 3 years on! The weirdest part was that they asked her to send tax book/certificate on by the weekend. She lives in south at the minute and they expect her to hand over tax docs before the weekend - not a mission!

Unless there was an agreement when purchasing the car (was there) then I can't why anybody would expect to think they own the plate after 3 years. Maybe the original owners just realised how much the plate is worth.

No agreement was signed or anything. I am guessing maybe the dealer wants it himself now! Once the original owner sold the car to dealer then the dealer would have had the option to transfer it to one of his cars so I guess the original owner is now 2 stages back in the cycle if you get me. Its a strange one!

yer, sounds like they messed up somewhere, bugeted its value into the part ex or similar then forgot to do it when they sold the car on. Maybe turn around and tell them that you've sold the plate only the other week :D

I'd speak to your gf's parents and see if they know anything, could be that the dealer/friend sold the car with this as an agreement, if they know nothing then I'd tell the dealer to politely shove off :)

As has been said the delaer has no rights to the plate automatically, if this is a dealer her and her family have a good relationship with then do yourself a favour and talk to her and her parents, they may know more than you about the situation and may also have a different opinion on what to do (especially if they helped her buy the car/she got a good deal by assosciation). After all unless you paid for the car it's got less to do with you than it does the delaer.

Guys, just to update this as promised....

They gave the plate back!! I'm totally ragin. Apparently there was a verbal agreement on purchase that the number would go back. I wouldn't base anything on that but its done now. Feel like my gf has been robbed as it was her folks her took it back before she could even get back home for the weekend!

Ah well, these things happen. But shouldn't
