Numberplate query?

I have bought a new numberplate. I have received the certificate of entitlement which I have filled in and posted off along with the v5 and mot.

Would I need to wait for an updated v5 to be sent back to me, to put the numberplate on? Or can I do it straight away? As long as I inform my insurance of the updated registration?

Thanks.

Wait for it. You will get a confirmation letter saying that it is all transferred and for you to remember to inform the insurers. That's when you can stick it on :)

Weirdly enough I got the confirmation letter then the updated MOT print-out a day later and then the v5 a few days after that..

Have you got your plate printed already? As the guy I went to wouldn't give me the plate until I had got the v5 back..

yeah mine came in a strange order too, just gotta wait for the one that gives the all clear. My mate put his plate on his car when he bought it and got pulled. Went to court for no insurance as he insured the new plate whilst the car was still registered to the old one. 6 points and a fine for ants in his pants.

Thanks for the replies I'll wait for the all clear. Plates haven't been made up yet.

You can do it (and then inform your insurance company) when the right information is displayed for the plate here: https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ - this is basically the point at which the 'you can now change your plates' letter gets posted (or queued for posting), and the V5 and MOT will follow.

Wait for it. I checked my number plate on line (number plate checking site) and it wasn't "transferred" for a good week or so - you'd get pulled over potentially for having the wrong plate on.

I'll wait. Hopefully they'll do it quickly, I only ordered the plate 2 days ago!

I waited for mine to arrive when I applied the retained plate to the new car but only because I was away for the weekend from Friday onwards and the paper actually arrived the Monday even though the database online updated on the Saturday. So I drove around most of the Midlands/Stoke etc for 3 days with a plate that was no longer applied to any vehicle.

The whole process took over 2 weeks for me though...

I once got a letter telling me it was now ok to put the plate which was on the car I'd recently bought, on it.

Dealer had put it on early as whoever traded it in kept their personal one. I have no idea if I was driving around on the wrong plate or not.

Also just ordered V10 ABD for the S6 (my initials).

Dvla are such tools. My car already has a private reg on so they've asked me to provide a cover letter explaining that I would like to give it up or send them a fee to retain it. What a faff.

Why does that make them tools?

If you want to keep it, you need to pay to put it on retention, it's hardly breaking news!

I was under the impression they just take it off like a non private plate and transfer the private plate on. I was unaware that you have to provide a cover letter explaining you would not like to keep the previous cherished mark. I can't find any information explaining s cover letter is needed online.

What is the old cherished plate? It might be worth selling it on as opposed to just handing it back

Surely its a good thing that they give you the option and ask if you've not specified, it'd be worse if you forgot and had the previous plate nuked for ever.

I can't see how requiring you to tell them what to do with the previous plate makes them 'tools'.

Would have been much easier if they phoned me and told me to send them the letter instead of waiting 2 weeks just for a letter informing me to send them one.

Anyway you're right it's good of them to give you the option.
