I am selling a processor on fleebay. In my description I explained that the processor was lapped etc and that if you didn't know what that meant then you should probably not be bidding on the chip.

No poo, this is a question I received from a prospective buyer:

Q:Lapped processor? I understand this to mean the original printing has been removed and replaced with the printing from a better specified processor. In other words it is not an Intel Core i7-860 at all! Am I correct? If not, please explain what you mean by lapped processor.

Now I know we all have to start somewhere but where do some people even get their ideas from :)
 
lapping = cleaning both CPU and HSF to achieve better conductivity of heat, cleaner surface easier to pass heat.

think looking through dirty window u have to look much harder to see anything - not lapped
again same window but this time clean as a whistle, lot easier to look through - lapped

bad analogy but i sort of works
 
No matter how simply you state something never ever underestimate the numpties inabilty to read and most importantly comprehend!
 
hey i hate to say it but there is a lot of people that don't know stuff... talking from experience all 8 post in i didn`t know what lapping meant either ... now i know after reading this thread.... and i ain`t much of a numpty.... just poor learned. knowing everything about a cpu is now in my job description, but could be in my hobby description if it was.

like the time someone mailed me and asked what do i mean by GT in 7600GT, as in what exactly does it mean. could have said grand tourer but i thought better of it..! :D
 
even if someone took the print off, you'd know what CPU it was in the BIOS

You don't want him bidding on it anyway as if he won it would be noting but hassle for you afterwards
 
Plenty of people dont read. I remember one ebay auction, the guy was selling an empty crystal X-box "Box". The auction was quite clear that it was just the packageing he was selling, yet someone bid high and then complained when all they got was an empty box. :)

Yeah most people don't read. I put on all mine 'I DO NOT ACCEPT BUY IT NOW OFFERS' and put things like 'UK ONLY DUE TO POSTAGE'

yet the amount of emails I get asking if I have a buy it now price, or will I post to Germany :rolleyes:

once I sold a game which was shrinked wrapped and someone asked if it had been opened :confused: Yeah, I opened it and then put it through my home shrink wrapping machine :D
 
Its the price you pay for selling on there. Only recently sold some memory which was bought for me as a 'present' ..... it was ECC stuff which was incompatible with my mobo. So I bought some new stuff and sold these off fairly cheepy stating in it 'make sure you check it is compatible with your motherboard before buying' along with 'ECC' 'Good server memory' written everywhere. they sold and now ive recieved 2 emails from the buyer stating 'it wont work in my motherboard'..... :(
