SX, unfortunately
I'm trying to get a bit more clued up with servers and server OSs for work, so have obtained a Proliant ML330 G6. I'm trying to install the current version of Hyper-V server on it with an eye to then using that to install and configure various server OSs to learn.

But I'm stuck at the first hurdle. The server currently has the integrated SATA/SAS controller - I have a single drive installed. The installation shows the drive fine, lets me create a primary partition and format it. Then stubbornly refuses to use it. Any ideas? :(

Ultimately I want the Hyper-V to run off an SD card, and will have a P410 raid controller installed but waiting for that to arrive.

When you say "it stubbornly refuses to use", what error message are you getting? I have had instances where Windows will refuse to install to an internal drive if there are external drives attached - including one instance where it refused to install on my laptop with an SD card in the built in slot.

It is not possible to run Hyper-V from an SD card, it has to be run from an internal hard disk or SSD. I suppose you could boot it from a VHD file but I am not sure how well that would work, or if you could even do it from an SD card.

Haven't got it to hand as I've had to go back to what I'm *supposed* to be doing, but it just said something like "Windows cannot use this partition" and said refer to installation log - with no clue where that may be!

There's currently no SD card in the slot (only drives are the single hard drive and dvd drive).

I'm basing my hope on using SD eventually to hold the host on this info:

HP provides several high performance Enterprise Flash Media kits for customers who require boot-from-flash for integrated
hypervisors and first tier OS platforms. Three form factors include USB, SD, and MicroSD allowing the flexibility to support virtualized
environments and direct OS boot for Windows2012 Server and Linux across the HP ProLiant portfolio.

Thanks :)

That was the error I got when I had an SD card inserted in the laptop's media card slot - are you sure you've not got something else connected? I can't think of anything else that it could be, though there are more detailed logs that you can check. Unfortunately I can't remember where they are at the moment, I'll have to try to find it for you when I get home.

The page you've linked to refers to VDI, which is a bit like thin clients except that you connect to a virtual machine instead of a session on a terminal server. The Hyper-V servers that run the virtual machines won't be able to boot off of anything other than an internal hard drive/SSD. Hyper-V is a cut down version of Windows Server (hence being able to use standard Windows drivers), and so it shares the same limitations as Windows when it comes to installation.

Edit: here is how you access the setup log (shamelessly stolen from technet): "Press Shift+F10 to pull up the command line window. From there, please see if you can locate the log files. Should be under: X:\Windows\Panther"

Great thanks, that makes sense :)

So what are the sd/usb slots for inside?

Will try again when I get a chance

Didn't fix it - in that I have no idea what I did different :D

The server has been robbed of a few bits before I got hold of it, so can't do much more until I get some more drives and the raid controller for it. But spending a bit of time learning the CLI side of things. I thought DOS was almost dead, but guess not :)

I've been having fun :(

My P410 arrived with the 512mb BBWC. Installed that no problem, updated the firmware, and popped a couple of RE4 drives in, used the ACU on the service pack disc to build a RAID 1 array.

Which Hyper-v 2012 flat refused to install on :p same error message as before. Considered trying to clone the original onto it, but decided to try installing 2008 and then "upgrading" to 2012. That worked fine

Hopefully not too much leftover from the 2008 install.

Sorry to ask the obvious, but I assume you provided the P410 Windows 2012 driver during the install?

So after loading the driver, does it show you the RAID volume and allow you to pick it to install Windows on? If not, then I'd say you don't have the right driver.

Trying to understand where the error/problem is.

Me too! Whilst I don't mind having to have to do a 2008 install and then upgrade, I'd rather not. Yes it was the 2k12 driver...

Probably the same issue I had originally which I still have no idea what was different next time!
