You're not entitled to NUS unless you're a student at an establishment associated with the NUS. If by enroll you just mean the day when you sign up for your course, then you have already accepted the uni offer, so you can join already :).

Don't buy it until you get your student card from your university. The U-card at the University of Sheffield, for example, is an NUS-affiliate card so you can use it for all the discounts. The student card at Leicester University on the other side is not an NUS card, and cannot be used for discounts.

I have no idea - I graduated from Sheffield and my girlfriend from Leicester so they are the two I know. I know the Cambridge one definitely is too - you'd have to check with KCL or just wait until you receive it. You should receive it at registration or some time shortly after, just hold on for a couple of weeks!

I got an NUS card in my freshers pack from uni. Not that I ever used it though, just used my uni card.

That 5% off amazon (+ always free delivery, or do they just mean the normal free delivery conditions?) with the extra card could be quite good if you order a lot of stuff from there.

My uni is part of the NUS thing, so the card has the NUS symbol on the back. You'll have to check whether you uni is part of it.

NUS extra is another thing that has even more discounts on it.

Biggest waste of time and money ever! My standard Uni ID card is all I have to usee at all shops etc to get a discount. NUS card is ********! Look into what your local town/city's establishments accept first before you put the cash down on a NUS card.

If your uni is NSU affiliated then I'd put money on there being a stand either at the freshers fare or at matriculation.

Theres a difference between NUS card and an NSU extra.. extra being with all the discounts. But you basically get all the discounts with the free one anyway.

My uni is NUS affiliated and has the NUS logo on the back of the card but I never have to show the logo, just the front so it surprises me that non-affiliated uni cards aren't accepted at all!

I use my Leicester Uni card all the time for discounts and have never had a problem. In fact, for the past 4 years of my uni life I have never had an NUS and not had a single issue with discounts, I wouldn't bother if I were you.

I buy the NUS Extra but that's only because the Institute of Chartered Accountants Scotland don't do cards and the Chartered Tax Advisor card is made out of bible paper.

You can usually get away with it, but you get the occasional sharp-eyed sales assistant who sees that the card doesn't have the NUS affiliation. My girlfriend had her Leicester Uni card rejected at the Showcase cinema here in Leicester for not being a valid NUS card (they accepted my Sheffield one even though it's out of date now!) and also when we went ice-skating.

My KCL postgrad card has NUS on it, and I am pretty sure that I haven't had it declined anywhere when getting a discount - although note this card is about 3 years old now.... Send KCLSU a quick email and I am sure they will reply pretty quickly - or I could ask tomorrow in the department...

Like others have said, wait untill you get your student card as it is quite possible it may already have an NUS logo on it and will act as an NUS card aswell.

From my experience nearly all shops just accept student cards for discount and don't even bother checking wether it is affiliated with NUS. Saying that, the majority of the time I forget to use it anyway!

Well if you're a business and you offer discounts to 'students' you don't necessarily specify that they have to belong to a student's union affiliated with the NUS rather you simply give discounts to someone who is a student - an ID proving they're enrolled at a particular university is often sufficient.

The NUS might have arranged some discount schemes but in plenty of instances you simply have to prove you're a student. I doubt student's from Southampton or other non-NUS student unions across the country have difficulties in their town when trying to claim student discounts.
