Nvidia 280 worth it?

Currently i'm using 2 x 4780's in Crossfire, shoot me if you will for getting rid of them, but they have bugs in the software I use and its a necessity that these are resolved. After countless searching, there are no solutions, so i'm forced to change over and send them back to OCUK.

Nvidia 280 are pretty superb, they are the bomb. But are they really worth it, or should i just get the 260 instead? Bare in mind my Motherboard is a Crossfire one, the Asus P5E.

Goodness grief, I wish people would do a bit of research before they go buying crossfire 4870's for what is a resolution that was common about 5 years ago, it's just silly in the extreme, surely a bit of common sense would tell you that? :p

Unless you upgrade your monitor you'd probably be fine with an 8800GT.

1024x768 is a bit of an odd resolution for a 19" monitor. Usually it's 1280x1024 for square 19" monitors and 1440x900 for widescreen 19" monitors.

I've seen a very old and very crusty 19" monitor with that resolution. Unless he's forcing a lower rez on a 1280*1024 screen...

Okay! Now were getting somewhere, I had some crazy settings in my ATI Catalyst area, moniter is native 1280x1024, @ 75hz. I have no idea why it was on 1024x768, eek!

So, with the new moniter resolution (Apologies for being retarded) What Nvidia card is best?

(Unfortunatly, i'm very dizzy when it comes to computers, hence this mess. I didn't realise that the graphics card were optimised to different resolution I just assumed, Sick Graphics card = sick fps and graphics all the time, regardless of moniter properties.)

If you must go Nvidia just get the cheapest GTX260 and that will be fine for that res. However, the 4870 (a single one, not crossfire) is overall a better card for gaming at your resolution. :)

Yeh, but i'm not staying with ATi, i'm moving to Nvidia. I think i'm going to get the Nvidia 280, so thats it's pretty future proof as well, so I can increase my monitor size without too much decrease in fps etc. I would get the 260, but the 280 is only like £30 more :S
The 8800GT is good, but nothing outstanding and like you said it's old. Although I the 8800GT is adequate for my monitor size, Im a junkie and want to play crysis at very high settings like the noob i am.

Any objections/issues? (that didn't mean to sound rude)

4850, or if you want nvidia a 260, and bfg and evga have modder friendly warranties

GTX260 for 1024*768? lol, just a note the 9800GTX+ is the nvidia equivalent to the HD4850, not the GTX260.

For such a low resolution a HD4850/9800GTX+ would be more then capable, even a 8800GT would be enough.

Because if his monitor was really 1024*768 then he was bound to upgrade it in the near future, especially after listening to a million "zomg u have a low rez upgrade ** monitor" posts on here. This place is like ocmputer mind control. :D

It's all been ordered now. I'm sending the Crossfire back because when I took 1 card out the Ati 4870 still had the bug in the software/program that I was using.

I decided to send the motherboard back as well, as the Asus P5E was Crossfire Ready and i'm going to get the Nvidia 280 I thought that if i get a different motherboard at least i can keep my options open for SLi in the distant future.

I've also decided to get this monitor:

Thanks for the help! Hopefully I don't need to make any more stupid mistakes about components and overkill until next year :D
