Nvidia 280GTX

Both the stock clocked 280's i've had have clocked higher than the highest pre-overclocked 280 cards OCUK sell.
My current one is at 730MHz core, 2.6GHz memory. Performs as well in some games as my 4870X2 did.

Ya seems quite a few ppl who have overclocked these are getting a good 100mhz+ or more on the stock speeds for the core, memory & shaders without any issue's. My votes definately for going with the stock card

Yeah I just went for the cheapest I could find (Leadtek), haven't had time to test what her limit it yet but it seemed to be running fine with an extra 75mhz core, 150mhz shader and 120mhz RAM or so.

It also came with a free copy of NWN2 which seemed a bit random as it's like a 2.5 year old game! Guess they just had a load of spares left over from previous cards.

Runnng Crysis Warhead with a BFG GTX OC at 1920x1200 DX9, Everything on Ethus apart from post processing and shadows on gamer. Very playable and seems very smooth.

One more thing I'd add to the factory-overclocked debate is that the BFG OC version has very modest clocks; +13mhz on the Core, +54mhz on the Shader and no Memory overclock at all compared to reference version. You'd have to be really unlucky not to get more than that from any GTX280.

I got the leadtek one too Hangtime, back when they were on offer at OCUK, together with copy of NW2, which was a bit random, but still can't complain at a free game i never expected!, i managed 700/1250/1450 on mine using the nvidia tools, not sure if there was more to come or not, but they were nice round numbers and a solid improvement over stock so i left it at that.
Others have pushed the shaders and memory another 50 mhz or so. That BFG OC looks disapointing with that overclock, such a modest overclock you'd be hardpushed to notice any differance when gaming frankly

22" is not that tiny, I have that size screen myself and was torn between getting 22/24 and 26 inch sizes, the 26 was just the little kid in me saying yeah get that bad boy, it was to big for my desk and not practical
The serious choice came down to 22" or 24" both are nice sized screens, i went 22" in the end having checked out the sizes in shops i was happy with the screen area on a 22, it's all personal preference.
Totaly agree but it would appear that the OP may have gone for a 280 just for one game and lets be honest, the power of a 280 doesnt realy become apparent until you hit a res of 1920x1200 and above. A cheaper card would have done for a 22" monitor unless you wanted to play Crysis at a high settings.

Thanks for all the replies! :D Have helped me better understand the cards capabilities. So this nvidia tool thing lets you overclock the card by over 1gig? :O
How do my system specs sound btw?, i suppose that if that quad core got a bit old after a year or so I could oc it a bit (but never done before, so how much could I get? :/)
Also, how does the card compare to ATI's 4780x2, since it seems to be their best vs nvidia's best :P

Nvidia tools lets you increase the stock speeds by as much as you like, but i doubt it will be stable if you go crazy, set it manually using the sliders (the find my cards best speed option crashed my system) keep to around a 10% increase over stock until you feel more confident in pushing for more, most cards should take a 10% overclock without complaint, and remember to increase the fan speed, it's very easy to use, so you can't really go wrong.

The ATI X2 is a powerful card, and it definately seems to have the edge at higher resolutions, at 1600x1200 or less though they are very similar in a lot of games one or two notable exceptions were one card outpaces the other, in fairness it's usually the ATI outpacing the GTX

check out the scores for yourself, but keep in mind there averages when playing those games there will be times when the framerates are either significantly higher ot lower than those scores
