Hi, I currently have a ATI 5870.

I've been tempted to change over to nVidia to see what this 3D vision is like. I would need to get a 120hz monitor also.

So, I could upgrade to a gtx480 or 570. Or would it be better to just upgrade to the 6950 and OC?

If anyone has experience with 3D vision and can give me honest opinions would be great.

Thanks.

In my experience 3D vision is amazing. Sadly, ATI have not delivered anything so good in their drivers. NV have included it for free in their drivers and it constantly gets updated with many many games supporting it. I would go for it any day

I've been using 3D Vision for a number of months, and it really is amazing. Games like Just Cause 2, Dragon Age, and Batman: AA look phenomenal. Some older games might break the 3D a bit... for example, Dawn of War II looks great in 3D, but the mouse and unit overlays are at screen depth. Some FPSes show the cursor at screen depth, too, so that can be a bit confusing. nVidia has workarounds for it, with a 3D cursor you can turn on.

If you want to run in 3D and have top-notch visuals, you're going to need a beefy setup. I run dual 480s to run in 3D at 1080p with every option on. With a single card, you might need to tone it down. You can expect about 2/3rds performance with 3D turned on.

Another 3D user here.

Good but only in certain games. Definatly more suited to FPS and racing games than RTS games.

Almost makes the graphics look better in 3D and definatly does give you a bigger "real estate", makes a 24 inch monitor appear like a 30 inch. Seriously good stuff.

If you are going Nvidia it is definatly worth a punt especially if you already have a 3D ready monitor. If you don't they are still good for non 3D gaming as the 120hz refresh rate is sweet as.

ive been thinking about getting 3d or eyefinity for a while but cant really decied on which, i did see a 3d demo a while back and tomb raider underworld looked fantastic in 3d

It depends what you want from the experience. With 3d it will enhance your enjoyment of the game visual wise but it will most likely make you worse at the game you are playing. If you go eyefinity it will enhance your field of view and for certain games give you an advantage over other players online in fps/driving games and certain other types.

If its eyecandy you want then 3d is probably your best bet.

If you are into competitive games online then i would go for eyefinity as it comes in much more handy.

I personally think eyefinity is much more useful for gaming than 3d is atm.

3D leaves a lot to be desired.

Problem is you need a pritty poor TN 120Hz screen and your stuck with paying a very high price for low resolution 3D 16:9 gaming.

Resolution is king for image quality IMO.

I couldn't get on with it, gave me a headache.

Way to much work configuring games and mouse movement felt horrible..

I wouldn't even use it for firms as it dims the brightness far too much.

It's amazing ! I've just purchased an Asus 120hz monitor and the 3D Vision kit came with it. Great monitor.

I'm just buying the bits for my new rig but my old machine is running the 3D pretty well at 1920x1080. It's a 6600 with an 8800GT 512mb.

BluRay films are also fantastic. Nice that it also converts normal movies to 3d.

No way would I go back ...

For me the best image quality when comparing my u2711 @ 2560x1440 to my 1080p 3d, is the 3d screen.
When comparing the two in 2d mode, there is no comparison. The Dell looks a lot nicer. However the Dell cant do 3d. So if i put a game eg just cause 2 on, the Dell the graphics just cant compare to the 3d image of the 120hz tn.

I dont know if anyone else thinks the same, but when i look at a 1080p 3d image it seems a lot higher resolution. Sort of like the AA. I seem to think a 1080p 3d image without aa looks comparable to 2d image with 4xaa.

Phil.

Keep your 5870, a GTX480 for 3D wouldn't be an upgrade, on top of that I wouldn't say it's worth the cost to move over to 3D, it's nice definitely, but really not worth the cost at the moment.
