It is worrying the tdp is so close to the power limit of the connector, which already has hardly any margin of error vs the 8-pin. I agree with you on efficiency. I run my 4090 with an 80% power limit in games, but efficiency and the safety factor of the connector are separate. The 12V-2x6 has a safety factor of 1.1 i believe, aka it can handle 660w safely. A single 8-pin has a 1.9x safety factor - 150w up to nearly 300w (and is a tried and trusted connector). It just doesn’t leave much wriggle room, even if running at ‘only’ 500w.tdp is over-rated.
When 4090 came out people blabbed on about using 450w - 600w and needing 1000w+ PSUs etc and it turned out to be a lot more efficient and sat below 450w, usually around 300w or less most of the time. I was using mine with a 750w PSU most of it's life along with a 13900k with no problems. I'd imagine the 50 series will be similar, in that it can use 600w if it needs to, but that will be rare. It would need all the Cuda cores and Tenser cores being pushed to the max to reach the full power draw and very few games are capable of that.
The 12VHPWR cables weren't created by Nvidia, that was Intel and SIG. They simply opted to use it.I know it's a different situation, but I'm not surprised there are at least questioning murmurs with regards to the power considering Nvidia seemed to get off lightly with the whole melting connector situation.
I had a 3090 Strix which was a great card ( just £200 over msrp!!!) And when it came time to get the 4090 the Strix was out the question as it jumped £700 over msrp but was very interested in the 4090 Tuf which at release was a couple hundred over the msrp but no stock after the hour messing around trying to get the FE This time will go straight for the Tuf as long as the price isn't ridiculous...roll on the 30thThe 30 and 40 TUF series cards were great. The 4090 Tuf wasn’t near FE/MSRP price for a good year or so after launch, if ever, from what I recall.

9m40s maybe gpu makers will reduce gpu die used for raster performance in exchange for more ray tracing
