NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - Technical/General Discussion

RT hardware has been available for about 7yrs since the 20 series came out, if anyone is still running 7+ year old PC hardware then it's way overdue for an upgrade by now. PC's have had it for 7 years, consoles though much slower have had the ability to run it for a few years and even top end phones can now do hardware accelerated RT, even the Steam Deck can even if it's very slow at it. There is no reason why anyone should be complaining that their hardware is incapable of even running some form of RT in 2025.
No what people should be complaining about is 7 years into the tech the top $2000 card is only capable of 25-28fps with RT in a 4 year old game.

It's not integrated into the heatsink because if it was there would be no heatsink left in the area occupied by the fan.

Asus managed it with their astral card, as i said it looks like last minute addition, otherwise they could have designed it to have it integrated into the shroud.

I think someone mentioned that it was to not reduce the amount of heatsink and will be an additional option if people wanted or needed to add an additional fan on the back. May have been Hardware Unboxed. At least it's not using zip ties :D

TBH I think people are getting all hyped up again, and I have a sneaky suspicion that the raster performance of these cards is not going to be all that great. Maybe it will with the 5090, but I am not sure I could afford the electricity bill with that one. The 5080 is immediately disappointing in that I think they have pitched it too low. Too much of a gap between it and the 5090 and too little between it and the 5070ti.

Wonder if someone will make a comically large heatsink at some point for fanless config?

It could keep it's own weight up be hitting the PC floor.

I bodged an Intel heatsink onto a GPU once many years ago:

Not quite the final product as I did a bit more to it to secure the heatsink and neaten up the cables, etc.

Hmm 5090 choices choices…

I’m currently torn between the ASUS Astral, which is clearly the ‘nicest / built like a tank’ card of the set but most expensive… and the PNY non-RGB, which will be the cheapest but probably least prone to whine based on the 4090s.

Polar opposite ends of the price spectrum :o

The thought of getting an Astral and needing to return it is just depressing. But that’s a risk with all of them I suppose.

On the 30th at 2pm is it pre orders. So if you pre order and pay next day DPD would i get it next day or is it just simply when they are in stock and get to your order queue number. And the day after that? Im off the 31st and hoping to get it then. If not im gonna have to hope its delivered on a day im home.

If you order on the 30th and you're lucky enough to get in quick enough to get the first batch, you should get it on the 31st..... I really wouldn't place any money on you getting in the first batch though. If it goes like other recent launches, I suspect OCUK will get <1000 units and north of 10,000 orders in the first few hours...

Ugh... personally I would never pay that much money for a PNY model, it looks so ugly imo. If I get a 5090, I'm already spending a ton of money so I might as well shell out a bit more and get a nice AIB
