NVIDIA 5000 SERIES

The 5090FE is pulling more power and is smaller than the 4090 so some extra noise should be expected. However, if it's annoying during normal (gaming) operation, that's still a problem that makes it a less impressive design.

My biggest question/issue with the design is that surely it's basically incompatible with CPU air coolers now as it's just going to blast them with hot air?

It depends on the case I suppose.

New cpus have high thermal limits. There is no real harm caused by a modern CPU chugging away in the 70s or even the 80s.

Tbh I’m not even sure how necessary it is for GPUs to sit below 70 these days.

This appears to be Nvidia's attitude with the 50-series.

It's actually very hard to get a 4090FE above 70C at all in a well-ventilated case. I wonder if Nvidia have decided that the cooler was over-engineered and that an increase in temps and noise was acceptable.

I don't doubt the new cooler design is more efficient but is it efficient enough to offset the increase in power consumption and reduction in cooler volume, thus maintaining the same levels of temps/noise as a 4090? I seriously doubt it.

Fan noise is a distraction. Some say they don’t care as they game with headphones on, well great! Meanwhile, the rest of us like high end gaming in quiet and peace and not generating 70+ heat in the process.

Will be really interested in seeing if the chiphell post about fan noise and temps etc is accurate in coming days.

Doubly interesting will be if you undervolt or power limit a 5090, will it then be on a efficiency scale similar to 4090 or will that <30% raw edge over a 4090 drop to something even lower because it no longer pulls up to 600W to get to those gains. Remember a 4090 only loses 4fps average (1-2fps real-time) when being power limited to 80% - That card is WAY over-engineered and specced on power/cooling.

I like to think that Nvidia would not release an FE card that sounds like a jet engine at its rated max power usage. That would be a huge design flaw after the FE cards getting so good the past two generations. Only a couple more days until we find out.
In all likelihood its going to be loud, the fans will be compensating for the smaller and slimmer design that they gave the card heatsink. There is less space for the heat to dissipate.

I agree that it will be louder than the 4090 FE (physics will do what physics does), but I don’t think it will be horrendous. Maybe i have taken too many copium tablets recently. Anyway, as each day goes by, my desire to purchase a 5090 falls lower and lower.

Your definition of horrendous may be very different to someone elses'.

I'm not sure if it'll be much louder than then 4090FE though. Nvidia aren't stupid, they'll have spent time working out the balance between noise/thermals/performance and it's really good to see some innovation in the heatsink design approach. Double flow through with no air being blocked might really mean that the fans can spin at the same speed as on the 4090 but in a slimmer format at the same temperatures.

It's all guess work at this point until we see actual reviews. The 4090 and 4080 FE cards were fantastic for noise and thermals - so the hope is that Nvidia has taken all the positives and learnings from that and implemented them into a smaller design because they know what they can manage with noise and thermals.

I don't think we're going back to the jet engine blower fan days. Does anyone remember the GTX 680? Or the R9 290X?!

I wonder if the 5090 was intended to be a 575w card from the start, or if they found the performance they were getting at 450w wasn't enough and decided to push the card/cooler as hard as they could.to squeeze better numbers out of it.

Given it is the same node as the 40 series, give or take, my guess is that from the start they knew they would have to juice the 5090 to the max to get additional performance from it.

100% they have had to push the power to get a reasonable uplift, a 20% uplift on a $2000 card looks terrible but 35% looks ok.

It's actually one of my main deciders in a new card. I much prefer gaming without a headset in anything other than competative FPS.

My current 2080ti is loud, while 5+ years ago could run max settings without breaking a sweat, or undervolted, to keep it quieter. Now it's pegged 100% constantly and max fan speed even on medium/low RT titles. It's super distracting!
 
The 5090 FE has larger fans than the 4090FE, so even though it's 15mm slimmer the larger fans should compensate because they move more air at the same RPM.

Larger fans tends to be quieter as well.
Larger fans are more quiet purely because they don't spin as fast as small ones to push same air volume. 120mm or 150mm fans at 3000rpm will be loud, very loud. Providing the 4090fe is same height as 5090, the fans are the same in both cards. And 4090 f3 fan size is 115x115x15mm
