Nvidia 580GTX

Some of you make me laugh!:p

Your telling someone with an i7-980X Processor Extreme Edition & 24Gigs of RAM to skip an upgrade as its not worth it!

Clearly value for money are not top priorities!

For that spec why miss out on an upgrade to a 680 / 690!;)

I've never understood that logic. The money that's been spent on the 980X and 24GB of RAM isn't gone, and to have the money to spend on that in the first place doesn't imply you've got lots more.

I'm gonna be going for a 3930K with 32GB of RAM with watercooling in a few months, undoubtedly expensive, does that mean I can justify a 690? No chance because I can get the same performance for nearly half the price.

I went 580 SLI > single 580 > 670 > 670 SLI - I had been planning on getting 580 SLI (or tri-SLI) but the 1st one I got was faulty and I realised that resale values on 580's were too high and selling them off to buy 670's was more cost effective

670's aren't massively better than 580's but the extra VRAM is nice and the cost of upgrading was tiny and they were massively cheaper than 7970's

you cant get the same performance as a 690 for half the price..

You'd have to be rich or crazy to get a 690 anyway wouldn't you? 680s and 7970s are badly priced as it is.

As for people being different when they have the security of being behind their computer, I do agree and I have experienced it a lot myself, I've had friends who would act like that, some have grown up since, others not so much.

However, I do get it may be hard to appreciate the intent behind my comments with just the text there in front of you.

Define them as eccentric and we'll leave it at that :). James_2k you've shown your nuttiness by chancing a beast of a card with a PSU that would make most shake in fear. Joking of course (about your nuttiness that is, I'd be slightly worried with a 650w) :).

Yeah it's a growing problem which is leading to officially representing yourself online. Such as Facebook etc. When people start fearing of being exposed, it will lessen, but the problem lies within humanity to act like that when faceless in the first place :(. As for text and the wrongful interpretation of it, it's been a problem throughout history. To avoid doing it, just word things better to not seem so blunt which shouldn't be a problem if there is no ill intention in the first place.

Are we best not just waiting on the OP to answer this rather than speculating their bank balance?. :D

Well standard clocked 7970 crossfire matches and even beats a 690 in some things.

So 2x 7950s with 1Ghz on the core (which they all seem to do) will beat a 690.

Get ones that can do 1200 on the core and it'll be pulling ahead quite a bit.

Even if you paid £800 for it, it's still nearly half the price.

Power consumption is silly, but at least it's total system consumption, and not just the cards themselves.

I know it's 7970s, but there's barely any difference between a 7970 and a 7950, so it's a fair compromise considering you can get 7970 performance from a 7950.

it is silly, thats mad amount more power used.

you can overclock a 690 too. and considering all these overclocks are without volt mods used on the ati cards. they do good.

look at the 3dmark thread, theres a few 7970 results in there, and they are good, but not much better than the cooler/quieter/cheaper to run 690.

i cant see the 7950 doing so well.

but up to you, you can get a renault 5 to go as fast as a bently, doesnt mean im going to get one :)

Fixed.

The cheapest 7950s on OcUK would be £440 for two, compared to £900 a 690.

In fact, that's less than half the price.

Yeah but hard to make those 7950s Nvidia's for the OP :). My 7970 is coming today "Your parcel is on the vehicle for delivery, due between 17:06 - 18:06" and should be going for a second 7970 along with a new system in a few weeks. As I sent back a Windforce X3 670, I only had to add £11.99 to get the Sapphire OC as I was happy with the performance of the 670 (OC'd also). So getting the 7950 wasn't as appealing to me but I agree with you, as looking at reviews, there's not £60 worth of extra performance between the cards. Even at £95 (for me), it would have bothered me and I like to be happy with what I've bought. It's not a wise choice I agree but I think for most, being content is worth more than money regardless of if it's saving or losing it.

Volt mods? It's just an adjustable slider, no different to raising the core speed.

3D Mark isn't a game, so for me the results are pretty meaningless.

Car analogies never work with graphics cards, so it's never really worth trying to apply them. Especially when you use such extremes. The difference between a 690 and 2x 7950s isn't comparable to the difference between a Bently and a Renault 5.

Not at all. 1GHz on the core for a 7950 would be considered a conservative overclock, and a 1Ghz 7950 would out perform a stock 7970.

For me, it only really goes as far as how much performance I get for my money, which is why I haven't owned an nVidia card in some time, as they very rarely have the price/performance ratio on their side.

I don't necessarily mind expensive cards, but to me, their price has to be justified by the performance they give. At the moment, I'm looking at getting the absolutely cheapest 7950s I can find and putting waterblocks on them when I build my new computer at the end of the year.

Absolute cheapest may change depending on what sort of warranty is offered however.
