Bit out of touch with graphics cards. I am changing my system and I currently have an nvidia 7800GTX that I have owned for 5 years or so. What cards out there would give me similar performance? I am trying to find a baseline so I don't buy anything that is any worse.

With regards to ATI anything in the 4 series or higher with x6xx in the name (or a higher number where the 6 is) should be similiar or better.

nVidia wise - similiar story with the 8 and 9 series, anything with x6xx or higher. Stay away from the lower 200 series cards but the 240 and onwards should be comparable or better, the 300 series is best avoided entirely and you'd be hard pressed to find a 400 series card thats worse than the 7800.

Thanks to all replies. I don't want to spend loads because I don't play games that often on my PC, more PS3 but around the £100 mark or preferably less. I just didn't want to end up buying a card that was inferior to my 7800GTX :)

In that case - this is the best card you can get for that budget. It will perform many times better than the 7800GTX and allow you to play games much better than on your PS3 (higher framerate, higher resolution- depending on monitor, and more features) - so long as the rest of your system is up to scratch).

As mentioned above - a GTX 460 is an even faster card and worth the extra imho, especially if you go for a version with a custom cooler like this, but I suppose it depends on your budget.

Was trying to find a good comparision of the GTS450 v ATI 5770 as they are similiar priced but its hard to find a conclusive result, overall it looks like the 5770 is a bit faster but there seems to be no consistancy to the results. (And way too many people just benchmarking the usual suspects Heaven 2.1, Metro 2033 and Farcry 2).

I think this is a rather good review as the review is mainly using game benchmarks, expaining how each individual game taxes the graphics cards (to account for the variability of results between games) and brings it together well. Part of his conclusion is:

Had AMD kept the price of the Radeon HD 5770 at $140+, there would have been a well-defined place – however small – for the GTS 450. But instead for the time being AMD dropped the price of the 5770 to $130 and brought it in to direct competition with the GTS 450. The GTS 450 isn’t competition for the 5770; at best it’s as fast, at the worst it’s as slow as a 5750.

Finally, this reviewer also points out that the GTX 460 768MB does not costs much more, but provides far more performance than both of these cards (as shown in the comparison posted by Mr Krugga). Hence it is probably the best bet if you have the money.

I'd forgotten OcUK still have some limited stock of those older 8 series cards. They would do well enough for the OP.

There's no future proofing with that card. If you're only upgrading every 4-5 years, makes sense buying a GTX 460!

What future proof? The op wants something similar to 7800gtx performance.

8800gts 320mb is faster than 7800gtx so that's it.
No need to spend £100 just to be "more" future proof

p.s. I still use 8800gts on my desktop and runs everything on at least medium settings @30fps

He states he is changing his system, I'm gathering he's not getting a like for like CPU/Mobo/RAM setup. Things change a few years down the line. There might be a game in 2 years that's just unplayable on any setting with that 8800GTS which by then will be worth diddly squat. Even if he doesn't get a GTX 460, i'd recommend a 5770, substantially more powerful than that GTS and better price : performance.

The best answer to the op is 8800gts. That's what he asked, that's what i answered. end of story
