I've just bought an Acer Aspire 5920G that has a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS

does this mean it will be faulty or just something to watch out for??
Depends who you believe, nvidia are saying it's just a batch that went in HP laptop but I don't think anyone really believes them anymore with other brands apparently failing and the way their share price has taken such a dive. Yes that is one of the chips in question though. It won't necessarily be 'faulty' right now but it may well come to a premature end.

People are saying it is to do with the compounds used to make the chips, nvidia said they used a different compounds for the chips in the hp machines but some enginers are saying they wouldn't change compounds for the gpu chips per surplier and they would be made all the same.
laptops and notepads, they are switched on and off more then desktops and use powersaving a lot more so the chip heats up and cooles down a lot so putting a lot of stress on the gpu.
Some vendors are using software to up the fan speeds but that will drain the battery also some gpu's might be running at a lower speed because of heat.
I not had first hand of this, this is just what been posted on the web but some of it by inq and fud.
But like it been said nvidia are blaming everyone apart from nvidia

I bought a XPS 1530M back in February, and it was working flawlessly until about a month or two ago, when it would sometimes go into sleep mode while I was playing WoW, and even shut down for no reason. It could be due to the warm weather as I've noticed my fans are running much louder and my CPU temps have been rising.

I would have thought the laptop would have been able to withstand this heat without the random shutdowns though, plus it's always been placed on a flat desk with nothing blocking the vent holes.

What I haven't figured out yet from reading these stories is whether there will be symptoms before the chip fails, like whether it would run excessively hot, or artifact or hang. I know my vostro 1500 puts out a lot of heat running games but that might be normal.

Since everyone knows about this now it would be nice if nvidia said something, Dell too. Nvidia share price has more than halved.

I've only just become aware of this.

I bought a Dell XPS 1530 a few months ago with an 8600GT inside.

So what happens now?. Is there going to be some sort of "recall" to address this issue?.

Or do we just get on with it and wait until things start going wrong, then contact Dell to sort it out?.

What happens if things start going wrong a week after your warranty is up?.

Really concerned about this to be honest!!!

16:01:34 Kris Avery Initial Question/Comment: Looking at buying a Dell XPS 1530, unsure now about the GPU problems I've been hearing? Any advice?

16:01:40 System You are now being connected to an agent. Thank you for using Dell Chat

16:01:40 System Connected with Madhuri_Yendapally

16:01:55 Madhuri_Yendapally Thank you for contacting Dell Chat Sales. This is Madhuri , your Sales Advisor. In order to serve you better, may I have your telephone number & email address, just in case of disconnection I can either call you or email you back.

16:02:47 Kris Avery and **********

16:04:26 Madhuri_Yendapally Now this is working fine

16:04:42 Kris Avery What is?

16:04:53 Kris Avery The graphics cards?

16:05:46 Madhuri_Yendapally That will help you to download pictures and videos faster

16:06:09 Kris Avery A graphics card wont really help you download pictures and videos...
16:07:07 Kris Avery I wanted to know if the problem with the nvidia R84 and R86 chips is still a problem, or is dell shipping it's laptops with different GPU's?

16:07:12 Madhuri_Yendapally on board is basic one and for this it uses system memory which will slow the system performance

16:07:42 Kris Avery http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/07/09/nvidia-g84-g86-bad

16:08:23 Kris Avery Yes, but my question is, the graphics chips being used in the Dell XPS M1530, are they faulty?

16:08:30 Kris Avery Or are they ok now?

16:09:16 Madhuri_Yendapally They are good , it mainly depends on what applications and how they are being used

16:10:17 Kris Avery So basically your saying not to use graphics intensive games or applications
16:10:31 Kris Avery Isn't the XPS M1530 made for that?

16:13:43 Madhuri_Yendapally now it mainly depends on what applications and how you use .

16:14:28 Kris Avery Well this was helpful...

16:14:30 Kris Avery Bye

My laptop is 6 months old and I've just had the 8600 changed as it went faulty.

Fair play to dell though they sent someone out within a few days, it would have been next day but because of the weekend it was today.
The engineer who came round changed the card and screen so can't complain really.

I assume this is what people are talking about all I read was '8600m could all be faulty' :p

Ok, since I switched from Windows XP back to Windows Vista a few weeks ago, my laptop occasionally shuts down for no reason once or twice a day, usually in the middle of CS:S or WoW. Nothing is blocking the vent holes, and I assume it has been built to withstand high temperatures (it's not even that warm in my room).

It even shuts down sometimes when I unplug it from the mains!

I hope no-one else is getting such issues. At the moment, I have no idea whether it is these so-called 8400/8600M problems, or something else. I may have to phone up Dell soon and see what they can do.

Aside from the typical comments on the main internet stories, example:

"OMGZ, I just readed that all 8400/8600 chips are faulty! Now my 8400 cant run Crysis at full screen proper and it is HOT when running, HOW CAN I GET REFUNDZ?" *

Has there been any more news on this? We've got an 8400M in a Sony and plenty of Dells using (what I believe is the) Quadro derivative of the 8400s. They are all getting the typical on/off, hot/cool useage that the "stories" report as the cause of the issue.
Just don't want to start experiencing numerous GPU failures without backup machines. :|

*Not a real comment but not far off some of the moronic things I've read on the matter. :(

Edit: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080716-nvidia-denies-rumors-of-mass-gpu-failures.html
Ars are always to be trusted over the Inq, they make some reasonable points here.

My Vostro 1700 has a 8600M GT in it and tbh I haven't had any problems up to now (/crosses fingers).

I leave it on for 3-4 days at a time just 'cause I am lazy and I have SETI etc. running 24/7 (stopping that though due to leccy price increases :() but it has never seems to overheat.

The hype has sort of died down now, I don't think it can be every chip that's affected, maybe a bit more than the single batch though.

We've not had any issues with any of our D630's or the M6300 (think it's got the same chip as the 8700). We've got plenty of them and they all have varied heavy use.
I'd expect some more news on the 'big sites' if it was as big an issue as the inq' would have us believe.
