Hi there

So I see OcUK have the Nvidia 9600 GT 512mb as their cheapest refurb card at around £35. Does this represent good value for money? for only 512mb and an old second hand card it seems a little expensive.

Reason I ask is i'm in the market for a new graphics card for my parents PC as im gonna give them my previous P5Q pro 775 based system and it needs a graphics card.

Would you recommend this card or is there an alternative thats better value for money, ATI/nvidia don't matter, and my dad will probably want to play a couple games but doesn't have too be latest games on highest settings.

thanks for any help.

You can get 4850's second hand for about 35 quid.
I don't think it represents good value for money, but it has a warranty, which is a massive plus.

Is a 4850 a lot better performance than a 9800gt?

Im really ****** off that I sold my 4850 for 50 quid last year when I could have used it. Had an excellent accelro heatsink kit fitted aswell. But oh well, you live and learn.

It's roughly 14% faster than the 8800GT/9800GT according to techpowerup:

But the thing is most 4850 are quite hot running...and if your dad is not a heavy gamer, then try to find a 2nd hand bus-powered 9800GT 512MB Green.

No he wouldn't be gaming much.

9800gt sounds good but bit out of my price range. Was hoping for something around £40 or less tbh.

I suppose it will have to be an ATI card as they are generallly cheaper

You won't get a NEW card for under £40 that offer on par performance as 9800GT.

If you would consider ATI/AMD card that offer on par performance as 9800GT, I would STRONGLY recommend the 6770:

yes it is £60, but what you are getting is:
- on par speed/performance as 9800gt
- dx11 support
- 1gb vram
- 3 years warranty
- low power consumption:

(so it will use less electricity thus cost less on the energy, and runs a lot cooler)

ok i understand. that 6670 sounds decent but I think i'll have to give it a miss and get something cheaper with less performance. i'll just have to tell him he'll have to play on lowish settings ;). It's only a small monitor and res anyway so should be ok.

I just can't justify spending £60 on a system thats already quite old and probably only has another year in it.

I'm gonna look around on ebay see if i can find any second hand ones cheaper i think

thanks for the advice .

Unfortunately the next model down from the 6670 is 6570- but the problem with that is it isn't really much cheaper than the 6670, so that's very poor value :p

But yea...I think your next best bet would be to look at 2nd hand...but problem with 2nd hand G92 cards is that you wouldn't know if it was already on it's been already on its way out, and only been applied with a temporary "oven bake" fix method...which only a matter of times before the problem surface again. I think for your dad's requirement, the refurb 9600GT is probably the best option, as you would have a peace of mind that you are at least covered for 1 year, than a 2nd hand card that may fail on you one month down the line. But of course it depends on "do you feel lucky?" :P

You have to weight performance/speed vs risk, and decide for yourself which would be a better option for you.
