So my GTX has "spare" capacity?

Sod that I want to unlock these "spare" shaders NOW!

For graphic work, not making sure that chick in the Vantage bench has properly bouncing breasts.

How many of my 128 processors have been disabled to you physics eejits can have your fun.

Stream Processors are there to do whatever they are asked to do when needed.

They can do many different Tasks, where as a Pipe and Rop can only do what they are made for and thats 1 thing each.

Look at them as a Adjustable Spanner or Swiss Army Knife.

I think it's funny people think G80/G92 can handle physics at the same time without a performance hit, it's just not going to happen, well it might happen if a game is using very little shaders but going by current games good luck finding any.
 
Yup i can't see it, imagine if yer GPU had to do PhysX in something like Crysis as well, jesus they can't even run that without. :p

it depends how hard the streaming processors get hit - a lot of games don't load these up too much hence why the 9600GT can keep up well with the 8800GT in many situations... typically no game is going to really really hard hit the streaming processors before being bottlenecked by other parts of the rendering process - leaving spare capacity that can be taken up by physics type calculations without a significant performance hit.
 
The Nvidia (Ageia) PhysX API is actually quite good.

I have been playing with it recently and its internal sweep and prune algorithms seem to be far superior to alternatives such as Bullet (found in Blender and a few PS3 titles) However I have also noticed that on this XPS 1730, turning the HW acceleration of the inbuilt PhysX card on makes very very little difference to simple examples that use the API.

In short, its a nice API but the £100 PhysX "accelerators" people bought really dont make much difference all told. I reckon Nvidia invested more because of the software framework than because of any hardware architectures they would be getting from Ageia.
 
I get an error when trying to install the Nvidia Physx drivers in the first post. "Error 1316. A network error occurred while attempting to read from file: XXXXXXXX".
