The first 3DFX cards were called 3D cards as they didn't support 2D and you had to have another brand video card installed for 2D..Wait, so 3DFX weren't making chips that processed graphics prior to the Geforce 256? It has nothing to do with not wanting to believe it, if it's not true, it's not true. As has been said, just because they started using the specific term "GPU" doesn't mean they invented microchips that accelerate 3D graphics.
But didn't nvidia invent the first single card that done 2D/3D and accelerate 3D graphics
Didn't nvidia TNT & TNT2 come out before the geforce 256 ???go read the web. it is generally accepted that the geoforce 256 was the first true gpu
Nvidia did 2D/3D on the core first and named it the GPU, therefor they invented the GPU, sounds logical to me.
So NV took 2 existing technologies & put them on a single card first, big deal!
I'm pretty sure that S3 did that first with the ViRGE.
